Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Dear Parents,
Would like to hear some views from other parents please.
Next year would be my daughter's turn for P1 registration. Im an ex IJ Toa payoh girl and would hence fall under phase 2A1 cos ive also joined alumni. This would also mean 90% of acceptance. The problem is we live in the east and travelling to toa payoh would mean about 1 hour to and fro. By school bus would take 1.5hrs to and fro.
Now our next alternative is St Anthony's Conossian Convent which is much nearer to where we live and each day would probably take 30 mins to and fro.
We would fall under phase 2C if we decide on this school. Historical results showed that applicants within 1km have all been accepted.
Our dilemma now is st anthony's conossian is not as good school as IJ Toa Payoh and it's so wasted to give up a precious seat there. However, the travelling time is really bothering us.
I wonder how would other parents decide? Any other factors we should consider?

I am an old girl from Katong Convent and I taught in SAC for about six months. So I will try not to sound bias.
The fact is mission schools have an obligation to teach the children' the christian way of life. There's more than just academia. If I am staying in the east, I will send my daughter back to KC, not because SAC is bad but only because I like to see my daughter in the IJ pinafore. (so lame .. i know).

some school Principals do not mind letting public (outsiders) know how is their Psle performance like, so they put all the detail up on their school website, including # or percentage of Quality passes (A/A*) for each of the 4 subjects including Higher Mother Tongue to compare against National Average cohort, mean average score of P6 cohort, % of pupils go Secondary Express / Normal stream, etc)
Normally, these schools tend to do well at iPsle, so do not mind to publish results, openly for public to know.
However, there is yet another group of school Principals (P), that do not want public to know (better keep it hush, hush), as they view Psle performance results as : sensitive info, to release
for this group of P :
during beginning of the year (January), at Curriculum briefing time :-
P will flash one PowerPoint slide to (P5/ P6 pupils + parents) in the hall, inform them the detailed Psle performance of previous batch, momentarily.
After flashing this slide, P then quietly remove this important slide to prevent others, from viewing.
Some P even alerted parents & students that, \"please do not post or share this Psle detail at kiasu parents forum, as the info shared, is meant to be for within our own school internal usage, only\".
No wonder there is little info on this matter......secretive Ps!! Sigh..... -

As for SJI junior I've read that it is affiliated to SJI but that there are at least 5 other schools that are also affiliated. That may make it difficult to get into SJI even with the affiliation handicap! So I am rethinking this one as well.
Actually not true. Doesn't matter if there is 1 or 2 or 5 affiliated primary schools to SJI. As long as the child (affiliated primary schools) can hit the min cut-off (SJI affiliation @ 238), ALL will be eligible to can enter SJI if they opt SJI as 1st choice. Any vacancies will then be opened to the rest (non-affiliation @ 245). Plus, it's also affiliated to Catholic Junior College.
Although Catholic High has only 1 affiliated primary school but the min affiliation is @ 240 (non-affiliation @ 249), which makes it slightly harder to get in thru affiliation. Maris Stellar affiliation @ 226, which is quite attractive, u can consider.
*note: abv min cut-off based on 2013/4 psle scores
Thanks lee_yl! That is sooo informative. I never thought of it that way...that the lower the cut off point the better for the kids to get into their affiliated school!....I was looking from the other perspective - low cut off point means the Secondary Sch is not so good.
I think you'v made a very good point especially since my ds is not exactly the kind who will excel academically...... he a bright boy but he is jut too playful and not focused.... -

Now will be the time to do any volunteer work or join any clan if i wish to qualify for phase 2B in the desired school of choice.
I am currently facing a dilemma. I myself is an ex student of maha bodhi and recently i joined the alumni. Therefore it grants me automatic entry of my child into phase 2A1 if i do apply for my ex primary school.
However i am keen to enrol her in Tao Nan primary school. But i have some roadblocks. Firstly i do not stay at marine parade region. Therefore i will need to move or rent a new place within 1km of Tao Nan by 2017. The other issue is that tao nan has scrapped its parent volunteer scheme and the other route to phase 2B is the Hokkien Huay Kuan which does not gurantee a letter of recommendation even if i join now ( about 2 years plus before P1 registration).
Of course i can still try for phase 2C too, if I have already moved to 1km of tao nan by then. But im afraid it’s risky as if i do get balloted out of phase 2C, i will end up in a not so good school.
Just curious… if you were me, which school would you try?

Anyone staying at bukit batok or choa chu kang and their kids take school bus to rulang primary? Can share your experience like timing and distance wise? I cannot decide whether to enrol my gal this year under rulang or some other neighborhood school in Cck or bukit batok.

In fact, some of my classmates had moved back from Jurong and Bukit Batok as their default choice is still MBS. -

In fact, a month back, I have made up my mind to go back to MBS to reduce the unnecessary hassle since im an ex-student there and now an alumni member.
You parents are right. The amount of time and effort spent on moving my child to another school is not worth it. This time could have been spent bonding with my child :rahrah:
