Not sure about guzheng. You can check with the teachers in charge.
For CO, the instructor need to know the strength and weakness of all students so as to deploy them effectively in performanance and competition.
From what I see, Shangyin's teachers are very well known and established in the CO circle.

Hello there, I'm enquiring. My daughter got accepted into GUZHENG AND CHINESE ORCHESTRA in DHS. She has problems deciding which to pick. Firstly, she has quite a lot of commitments with third language and tuitions (she's a little of a slow learner). Her original choice was CO followed by GZ but the teacher in charge told her that because it's hard to get into Guzheng and since she has, the teacher would like to give her a chance to change her choice. She has totally no music background and is not sure because she is worried that if she joins CO, she will not be given a CCA of her choice. Since she doesn't have Guzheng experience, do you know if she will have a chance to represent school team sometime and what do you think about the CCA management?

Hi, I graduated two years ago from DHS and was also part of DHSCO, so I hope some of my experiences will help. Practices are mondays (sectionals) and fridays (orchestral). Students usually join in the CO sessions year 3 onwards or in year 2 if they lack players for a particular section or if you are extremely talented. Year Ones and twos only need to go for Shangyin lessons once a week -usually one-on-one private lesson. There is annual concert once a year (year fours and the senior high section tend to have more opportunities to play in it). Practices will increase when concert is near. SYF (April) and Overseas trips (march hols most of the time) usually bi-annually. so, for years with SYF, Overseas trip and concert, students can be really busy. That being said, it is always an honour to be under Dr. Tay Teow Kiat conducting, also helps to train you in event organisation and leadership skills esp if you got into the CO committee. DHSCO is really a closely knitted family with a strong membership of 300 students and has a really nice tradition of maintaining very close relationship with most alumni. Opportunities are ample if you practise hard and build solid foundation in year one and two. Don't worry, I would say 70% of the members picked up their instrument newly in year one. Instructors are very committed and yes, they usually prefer students who din learn before so that they can mold them. e.g. I am from strings section and my instructor has been teaching erhu in DHS for close to 20 years.

personally i feel that pipa is really hard...liuqin, prolly require smaller hands

For non DSA students who has no music background, fees start at about $150 per month. For students who will be starting at higher grade, higher fees apply.

Yes, for CO, you will be strongly encouraged to go Shangyin for lessons.... though not sure what happens if you don't (haven't heard of any case so far). The rationale is to ensure uniformity and consistency since most shangyin instructors are also DHS CO instructors. Nearing concerts and competitions, the instructors will also focus on CO pieces besides the graded exam pieces.

Agree! Think pipa is difficult esp for beginners. Liuqin should be easier

If girls want to learn Erhu : easy or difficult ?
