Since CNY is round the corner, I like to know - do parents give RP to tutors when they give you oranges?

If yes, what is the norm/market rate for a RP?
I do give a 'lai see' to the tutor...$20.

I only give to 1-1 tutor, not fixed. $10 or $20.

Tuition center tutors, no, I don't give. My kids will just wish them happy new year.

There is no need to give tutors Ang Pows. If they give u oranges. You can exchange with them.

Not in my opinion. If your tutor gives you oranges and expect ang pow in return then I have a poor opinion of them. My students' parents usually give me CNY cookies (I turn them down but they will say for my kids 🤷 bobian have to take). Maybe cos I am married so no angpow but in any case, ang pow should be given as a blessing. Not a must. I think exchanging oranges is good enough. It is the thought that counts.

But if u r giving them ang pow regardless of whether they bring u oranges anot then it is a different story.

I also keep spare ang pows (of varying amounts) in my bag in case they wanna give ang pows to my kids, I will give my students too. I prefer not to take advantage of them. If they give cookies for my kids, I also give ang pows. However, I try not to initiate in case they feel uncomfortable.

It is a personal choice as to giving or not giving Ang Pow. U might want to treat ur tutor to festive goodies instead. Like those homemade stuff etc. This year my student gave me a lantern made of ang pows. Very thoughtful of him.

Not necessary to give red packets to tutors. I don’t give red packets to my students either. Sometimes we do exchange souvenirs from our vacations, though. I think it’s understood that the biggest reward for both the tutor and student is if the student does well in his or her exam. Parents shouldn’t feel obliged to give the tutor extra money or gifts. The only time I accepted a red packet from a parent was when the mum insisted, as she said she had a practice of giving red packets to her employees. Actually tutors are not really employees as we are self-employed, but I accepted the red packet from her as she seemed really determined to give out the ang bao.

If my kids attend tuition centre, then I will not give red packets…if tutor is married, I will give her bak kwa or some cookies…the other tutor who is single brings mandarin oranges every new year…sometimes she gives the kids little treats too…so I give her a red packet. I really appreciate my tutors for their patience and dedication.
