Hi,
A lot have been discussed since the last time I posted in this thread. That’s to all who have responded to my issue abt helping my DS to write compos. Will try out the ideas and hopefully he will be much better. Just an update…after a 1 week or so of intense compo writing exercises given, teacher moved on to other areas and DS only needs to do 1 a week…phew! Some of the written compos did come back after they have been marked, but not all. Anyway, this episode highlighted an area of improvement that I need to work with DS, so I’m thankful for the ‘experience’. -
Autumnleaf:
Hi Autumnleaf,
Curious though as me and Hb find that on day to day my sons give and take interaction with people is lacking evidently, though not always. As in, often when people greet him, he fails to respond or does not even look at them when we make him respond. So me and Hb wonder in such case, when filling the forms, is it the observation of that 2 hrs that is a better gage, or the everyday observation that me and Hb had observed?
Since you've engaged the psychologist to do a test on your son, then it is better to trust their professional judgement. The way the test works is that if there is a problem eg with eye contact, then it must be consistently apparent in all situations, with all people. -

Mine is considered high functioning. He has Aspergers'. He didn't have any speech delay. In fact, he was quite advanced cos PD noticed that he was making sounds that babies of his age don't make at around 6 mths. His first words were around 15-16 mths old, quite abt the same time as his NT sister. And by abt 18 mths, he was humming 'Mary had a little lamb'.Hi
For high Functioning ASD child is it true that the child will not have language delayed? -
phtthp:
How do you define a high functioning or a low functioning child ?
Whether a child is high functioning or low functioning depends on the IQ test. That's why the ASD tests comprises of the IQ part. According to the psychologist, the higher the IQ, the better the child is able to develop his own coping mechanisms to compensate his disabilities. -
Gifts from Heaven:
I think one of the diagnostic criteria for Asperger's is that the child had no language delay. I'm not sure what they mean by \"language delay\" though. My daughter only spoke at 23 mths, and the psychologist was a bit undecided whether to classify her as Asperger's.

Any idea what the classification is if there is no IQ score? Just look at some of the components? Which? My daughter was not given an IQ score because the difference between individual components was quite great, and apparently a score could not be computed. She was eventually classified as Asperger's, so I guess that high-functioning.phtthp:

A lot is said abt caning. According to my psychologist, whether kid is ASD or not, if the situation warrants physical disciplining, then it should be done. But I can’t bring myself to do caning, so I smack instead, using my hands. I feel that smacking with my hands is better for me cos I will know how much strength I’m using cos hand will pain. But I will never let my hubby cane/smack my kids cos a man’s strength may hurt the child badly or even kill him.
However this method of discipline (caning/smacking) cannot be used forever. As the child grows older, we will not be able to cane/smack the child anymore. So other forms of discipline (eg removing priviledges) has to be enlisted.
Autumnleaf, maybe u want to use other forms of disciplining instead of caning for your P4 boy, since caning doesn’t seem to be working and he is already 10 years old. slmkhoo has given some good suggestions on the issues you have with your son dismantling his mechanical pencils and playing instead of doing his homework. Actually, if he breaks his mechanical pencils, just don’t get him a new one. Let him use the old type pencils which you have to sharpen every time it become blunt.
tygeoh, I cannot fathom you giving your DS 15 strokes of cane in full man’s strength over not eating white rice. If he don’t want to eat white rice, then don’t eat rice lah…won’t die what and there are plenty of other things to eat, right? And 15 strokes is a lot! Anyway, it works for you and your son, so I will just zip my mouth.
Peace -

According to my psychologist, the variation of the PIQ and VIQ scores must fall within some limits (ie the standard deviation) for them to calculate the consolidated IQ. We were told to just take the PIQ score as his max potential. And if we are not comfortable, we can just take the average of PIQ and VIQ.Gifts from Heaven:
