Year-4 Gap Semester local & overseas courses are up on Stamford Portal. Noticed there are no Europe & US courses this year (due to budget cut?). Choices are pretty limited too..
Overseas courses in Asia (eg. Japan) should be highly competitive this year..
Which are the more competitive local courses?
What is the allocation based on? On results only? -
@ ngl2010, fanren, randwick..
Quoting Head of Gap Sem - What's most important is not WHERE our boys GO, but WHAT our boys DO, during Gap Semester. Wise words indeed..
Gap Sem is not graded. The boys can apply for any International &/or Local Courses which interest them, and discover what they like (or don't like), without having to worry about grades. Work Attachment Programs allow the boys to experience what working life is like.
The boys need not attend school for 8-9 weeks in Term-4. They plan their own activities by attending courses overseas &/or locally, and working in local companies. Each 'activity' is about 2 weeks max. So, the boys usually plan for 3-4 activities for their Gap Sem.
Generally, this year's International Courses range from Community Service / Conservation, Leadership Development, Music & Art, Photography & Social Documentary, Scientific Research, IT, History & Geography etc. Countries include Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia. Actually, the choices are not limited, if one is not so choosy..
Certain courses' minimum requirement is GPA 3.6, while others is 3.2. Shortlisted applicants need to attend selection interviews.
For Self-Initiated Courses (SICs), the boys have been briefed not to initiate any courses beyond Asia, as most likely they'll not be approved by the school (though parents are willing & able to pay).
PS : Only International Courses are listed. Local Courses and Work Attachment Programs are not listed yet. -

Overall Performance of the Class of 2014
Two students offered 13 units of study and scored distinctions in all their 9 subjects.
50% of students offering four H2 subjects scored distinctions in all four subjects. 64% of students scored three H2 distinctions in their content-based subjects. Rafflesians continue to excel at the General Paper, with 48% of students scoring distinctions.
331 students (26%) achieved a perfect University Admissions Score (UAS) of 90. The UAS is used for admissions by the four autonomous universities in Singapore. It is computed based on a maximum score of 90 points, and takes into account General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry, Project Work, three H2 and one H1 content subjects. In addition, 162 students achieved distinctions in all subjects offered, including H3 subjects.
The class of 2014 achieved exceptional performances across the various subjects:
β’ 8 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Biology, Knowledge and Inquiry and Literature in English
β’ 7 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics and Physics
β’ 6 in 10 students scored Distinctions for Economics and History.
The following is the breakdown of the number of distinctions obtained by our students:
β’ 9 Distinctions: 2 students
β’ At least 8 Distinctions: 52 students
β’ At least 7 Distinctions: 278 students
β’ At least 6 Distinctions: 542 students
We congratulate the Class of 2014 on their outstanding all-round achievements. We would also like to express our thanks to our teachers, staff, parents, alumni and the RI Board of Governors. It is only with their dedication and unwavering support that RI can continue its tradition of service to the nation. -
A general query- my son is in Year 5 and I want to know what to do with his NCC boots; there are two pairs and it is taking up quite a lot of space
My son says it cannot be disposed off like any other ordinary pair of shoes. Anyone has any pointers ? -
Firefly, maybe.

Congratulations to class of 2014, teachers and support staff! May these rafflesians aspire to contribute to our society in countless positive ways as they embark on their different life quests.
On an unrelated topic, this yearβs scheduling allows double RAs in math and chem in JC1, which wasnβt possible in recent past years. From my DSβ experiences with the staff so far on a couple of administrative issues, RIJC staff has come across as flexible, ready to help and highly responsive to queries and requests. The follow ups are always prompt. I hope our students wonβt take these educators for granted. They are truly dedicated in helping our kids reach their academic goals. -
Thank you, naggo-nitemare..
Great to hear that double RAs in Math & Chem is now possible for JC students..
