2015 PSLE Discussion and Strategies

How to ace Science paper 1? I've tried telling mine this too - try to score for paper 1 as paper 2 OE is tougher. But best minimum error still 2Qns, usually 3 or 4 Qns. Have told him to do cross out method, reading properly, etc. Doesn't seem to help
For Science, I always tell DD must ace paper 1 that is 60% if she aces that even if paper 2 (which is basically a mystery to all of us) is a just pass she would have gotten an A. Met her Science teacher last week and the teacher told me the same thing. Exam is about strategy and tactics as well, not just knowledge.
So lately, I've been trying to help his paper 2 as its always not worded according to \"concepts\" and \"key words\". Let's see how is the CA result for Science, whether this strategy works for mine. :xedfingers:
So far DD is usually about 1-2 questions off. That is still ok. Her score for OE range from low 20s to high 20s.
So overall she is in the high 80s to low 90s range. We are ok with that.
Her teacher was telling me to make sure DD knows her facts well. For MCQ do more papers to familiarise herself with the types of questions asked. According to the teacher, though there may be some variations but by and large, year after year, the questions are about similar. In fact pretty much the same for OE. The challenge is when kids answer in plain English instead of using the specific 'science' terms. -

This is a real killer...the science terms (key words) which markers are looking for, not just English. -
DS normally gets 50s for Science Paper 1. He loves to announce that he already passed this subject. So with Paper 2, he gets high 70s to mid 80s. Not this time so a little disappointed. We had to remind you again to be careful and not lose unnecessary marks in Paper 1.

Wah, your DS Science is very good! -
DD2 fared badly this CA. Will need to roll up my sleeves more to see how else I can help her. With regular school hours, followed by remedial or supplementary and then CCA, topped with an obscene amount of homework, she's too tired to think straight.
However, she still tries to get our home revision done on days she is more free. Gotta appreciate her for trying despite her weariness. The hours she spends in school and at home for school, is really :siao:. So, I tell her to catch up on sleep when her schedule allows.
Hubs is extremely angry with her.
I wish I could do more to help her.
So, I will! -

Only Science. And if he's careful not to waste marks. Disaster for EL & Math. Can't imagine if he still has MT.bb_ mom:

I was asking him which EL section(s) we need to focus on and he was quick to reply with \"All!\" :faint: So much to do & so little time. And that's EL.
Soldier on! -
Hi bb mom,
I am also pushing daughter to reach high end of 50 for science MCQ.
For open ended section, it is hard to score because science keywords are necessary to gain those precious marks.
Have to start pushing during 1 week holidays as SA1 will be very crucial. if there is MT to handle as well, I will need to pull my hair very often. -
The thought that PSLE is just 6 months away is keeping me up. But I look at DS and there's no sense of urgency. :frustrated: I pray that he works with me, stay focus during his exams. Like Buds, I know he's putting in effort. But he still has room to improve when it comes to best efforts. But I need to lead to accept his results, whatever it may be. This is the biggest lesson I need to learn before the results are posted in Nov.

Embracing the outcome is indeed something you hafta experience with the moment. I did with DD1 two years ago. Facial expression and body language alone can say a lot, even if your lips mouth something else in case it’s a disappointing outcome.
DD2 does okay for school work and even our home revisions, but it’s the pen and paper exams that doesn’t reflect…. and yes, both our kids are definitely trying. That’s the bummer. I cannot bear to even reprimand her. She just look at me with those eyes. I know she tried really hard. So, I just couldn’t…
Yes, bb_mom! FIGHTING! -

I hear Ta about the pen & paper exams not reflecting how they've been doing on a regular basis. DS also do quite around with revision papers at home. But generally flop at actual exams! If only they're graded on daily work...
