Group Piano Lesson vs Pte Lesson
-
a) for Piano
when a child want to take Grade 1 Practical / Theory piano exam, have to switch to individual (no more group)
why ?
because for Grade 1 :
piano lesson usually half an hour (30 minutes) or 45 minutes
each child need individual attention from the Tr to concentrate, cannot be in a group anymore
group :
is more for pre-school kindergarten children learning
b) for Electone (Yamaha)
Grade 1 :
still can learn in a group -
I decided to switch to 1 to 1 when starting to learn grade 1

Hi, mummy chua.
Does your DD learn much in the group lesson? I mean what does the teacher teach in the class?
I want to find out more information on the piano lessons for my DD too.
Thanks. -
mummychua:
Benefits of individual lessons:
how do parents assess when is the right time for the kids to convert from group to pte lesson.
1. 100% of time during lessons is focused on your child.
2. No need to deal with distractions from other kids, ie. crying, playing around, screaming, etc.
3. Lessons tailored accordingly to your child's requirements, no need to follow a pace that caters to majority of group.
4. Slightly more flexibility in terms of changing lesson schedules.
Right time to convert from group to individual class would be when child is able to take advantage of above benefits. That would mean child is able to maintain a certain level of attentiveness during lessons, and able to take simple instructions from teacher. Also, the private attention is needed when preparing for piano exams.
Age is not the main indicator of a child's readiness for individual lessons. Some kids have no problem starting individual class at 3+, while others may not even be ready at 7+.
Generally, younger kids can cope better if there is at least a parent who plays piano, and able to sit in during lessons, and provide guidance during daily practice for the rest of the week. -
Phtthp, if we r not planning for exam, does it means that it will still be ok to continue with group lesson? I have no idea what is the standard and requirements for grade1.
I like group lesson coz it wont be so boring or intensive for my DD with all attention on her. In group lesson, there’s some sort of competition btw the classmate. I can see good improvement in the whole class and lesson is always interesting.
But i will always have to ‘wake’ DD up from her dreams. And teacher didnt have enough time to correct fingering, correction is mostly done by the parents but since im not a piano player, there’s a limit on my capacity.
I think my main worry for group lesson is DD picking up bad habits in playing. In this case, individual lesson will be better right?
Anyone with recommendations for pte teacher in bukit timah area? -
Jy2111, my DD is with MYC, doing their sunbeam 2. You could check with them directly on their program. According to them if you will to complete their program, it will be at abrsm level2 on playing, and level3 on theory. But they dont send kids for exam.
