Q&A - PSLE Chinese

What should I do? Just recent I found out that my P6 girl who will be taking PSLE this year couldn't recongise Chinese characters.


She had failed all past year but I thought that she's not putting her best in it. Recently was warn by the doctor when he asked how's my girl doing in her preparing.

So I told him she got a 9 for this CA 1. Questions came in, Answers followed by my girl and Lighting striking into my body.

What can I do otherwise the Chinese gonna to pull her down and might not even pass her PSLE.

Anyone able to help me or suggesting to me..

别担心，以我往年经验。只从词语入手，离会考只有五个多月，口试4个多月。还是有时间的，只让他多熟悉课文，把所学过的词语及搭配掌握牢，会起作用

I think this is the matter of interest concerned. You may subscribe to Chinese programme like CCTV 少儿頻道, or any other programme that he may be interested. Try to speak as much Chinese at home as possible. I've a colleague who station in China told me his son failed very badly in Chinese not knowing why. Until he came back Singapore then he realsied it actually influenced by the mother, who keep complaining \"I hate Chinese, I hate Chinese\". Just imagine how could the kid be doing well when hearing this complaint from the mother. So as adult we've to show good example, no matter how you feel about this subject.

I was very reluctant to study Science during my school time. So I told my kids how regret I'm now not to study well (I just pretend so) , which otherwise will gain me a lot of knowledge. To encourage them, I will always sit with them whenever they study Science and pretend to learn from them. They feel good about it and thus put in a lot of effort.

You may consider working on the psychological aspect of the kid, hope can help.

I always ask DS "can you come back and teach me?"
He does it without fail. Maybe he felt accomplished.

I am in the same predicament too.
We have to tackle the fundamental problem first i.e. ourselves as parents. Do not despair. And do not give up on him.

I am a Chinese-illiterate but yet I try my best to coach him in grammar and the other MCQs, through the use of Pleco (a free dictionary app) on top of private tuition. We are seeing improvements, no matter how minute. I told him that if he is able to improve by just 1 mark (or 1% whichever is applicable) for every assessment he does, imagine the marks he is able to achieve after 10, 20 assessments. A borderline pass of 50 marks to 60, then 70 and so on. (caveat: I know this is not as straight forward as it sounds. To improve by 1 mark, at times, he had to do 3-7 exercises, before he actually see the 1% improvement.)

He was very down when he received his CA1 results but I think that pep talk gave him some hope. His eyes lit up. The task at hand did not seem overwhelming nor impossible any more. Now whenever I asked him what he should be revising for the day, Chinese will always be his first choice... Hope this helps

教书多年，对华语真正有着浓厚兴趣的学生实在是太少了。您儿子马上面临PSLE，当务之急只能是让他不抗拒华语，能顺利完成PSLE。要爱上华语不是一两天的事情。

要通过考试，并不是很难的事情。首先，您得让他不要感觉这是一个压力。多鼓励他。心理上负担很重，会影响学习的效果。另外，孩子考试已经不及格，要找出不及格的原因。是字词不熟悉？是无心做题所以随便写答案？是作文完全没有思路？是口试没有技巧？然后对症下药，必定能取得一定的效果。以我的经验来说，小五小六开始不及格的孩子，许多是字词掌握得不够、不扎实，导致无法理解题目，也写不出作文。

小学阶段的字词量并不大。还有几个月的时间，并不是没有希望。查漏补缺复习字词、再加上一些做题技巧、写作技巧、口试技巧（口试很容易提高），几个月时间可以进步许多。


当然，孩子还要学习很久华语，兴趣是非常重要的。但是应试又是一个非常现实的问题。在孩子有时间的时候，不妨给他看一些他喜欢的华语电视、书本，哪怕是漫画也好、搞笑的也好，让他对华语不排斥。多多鼓励，而不是总出问题考验他。

Sorry for late reply, it has been so busy in both work and monitoring my son.
Thank you very much for your encouragement and sharing of experience.
My Chinese is quite good, but I am not able to coach my son well in his Chinese, this really beat me badly.
His comprehension and also composition are quite bad, always RED.
Now, I always give a lot of encouragement to him, ask him to think positively, and keep on telling him he can do it, and how important is Chinese subject. These few days I can see some improvement, I hope he can continue. This was partly because I have confiscated his HP, because he is always distracted by his HP. Every time if we return his HP to him, his result will dropped. Before CA1, we already told him that we will confiscate his HP if he is not doing well in his CA1.
We told him we do not need him to score A, but B is enough.
Now, I would like to know and appreciate if anybody can share the good technique to improve composition and oral test, as well how to make him remember the vocabulary better.
Actually, I am also pretend that I don’t know certain words or make mistake on purpose, let him correct me. And yes this actually built his confident.

抱歉那么迟才恢复。工作还有家庭兼顾， 很让人喘气。 非常感谢各位的鼓励，分析以及经历分享。
我自己的华文蛮不错， 但是就是教不好儿子的华文， 这一点让我很挫败。
他的语法，阅读理解， 生字， 作文不是很好。 尤其是阅读理解和作文， 常常都是问题百出。
我现在都在一直鼓励他。给他解释认真学习华文华语的重要性。 这几天都有不错的进步， 希望可以这样继续下去。其实这也是因为我没收了他的手机， 因为他是也个容易分心的孩子， 手机常常让他分心。我在CA1前， 已经告诉他， 如果成绩不好， 我会没收手机。
我告诉他我不需要他取得A等， B就已经足够。
但是要如何让他可以记住更多的生字， 如何才可以写好作文和考好口试？
我也常常装不懂， 或是故意犯错， 让他改正我， 这真的可以培养他的信心， 让他对自己的程度有信心。
