I personally find that language should be taught first. It is not difficult to teach phonics at home.
For those who is interested to teach phonics at home, you may need to
1. buy My Preschool World series of Phonics Books at Popular bookstore. The sounds are very clear and easy to learn. Is great tool to learn the blending/sounds. However the words are too little.
It has 4 readers + 4 activities + 2 enrichment activities + 2 vcd.
2. please download free printable phonics cards here for more pratise. It is comprehensive. Words are separated from the pictures http://www.mediafire.com/FleschCards
More details on how to teach using the fleschcards

Free printable phonics activities & readers.

3. Children must learn letter sounds first. Please use my preschool world reader and activities and vcd 1. Then progress accordingly. -
I agree with MMM that K1 is indeed a ideal age to start, I started my boy when he was in K1 and now in P1, in fact he is covering P2 work. The program allows the child to learn at his/her capability rather than what is being taught in school.
And they do helped to prepare the kids for CA, SA too
I notice that recently have another new branch in Kembangan, good news for eastlanders like us

MMM:
Hi MMM,Hi Titank,
I also want to add that personally I feel that it's good to start kids young so that they can progress through the levels faster given their early exposure to the program.
Eg. K1 is quite a good age though what they are doing is very elementary. Eg. my K1 is only at level 2 currently but it sure provide a good foundation and training for her to know her numbers confidently and also count correct as they tend to be careless when counting currently. Now is her 3rd month in Enopi and I observed that she is starting to get the hang of 5's. Eg. if there are 19 dots, when she 1st started, she would count 1-19 all over again and again so it takes time. Now we get her to observe the dots (eg. if she see 3 rows of 5 dots, she knows it's 15 so she will start counting from 15 onwards and this improves her speed).
So generally to have some Maths program before entering P1 is good? Considering Kumon, Enopi, MPM or even Abacus? What would be the ntry age of Enopi? Age 5 as at year for reference or month of birth for reference?
Any good recommendation of Enopi Maths? They seem to be like francise right? DS went for Montessori Maths before P1 so guess now he in P1 would have some help in a way. -
Hi Titank,
I believed that most of the programme will help the kid in some way, it is just that depend how much they can pick up and how long for them to learn. -
Hi June,
Which Enopi centre do you go to? -

My 1st child didn't do any maths enrichment. Ok her P1 results are 80+ type. But at some point, we started her on some maths program (mighty maths out of convenience) as we can see that she is doing ok but some concepts are not strong so it'll lead her to struggle subsequently. My 2nd child did Kumon for a year. Compare the 2, the 2nd is always better arithmetically. Seeing their outcome, I wanted my 3rd to start earlier and on the right program.
I heard some kids start enopi at 3.5 yrs. But they will need someone to guide them eg. read instructions,etc.... Also, if they can't really write (eg. motor skills not ready), I personally feel that there is no point starting them. In the case of my K1, we see that her writing is starting to get better though she struggled with the number writing initially. eg. how to write a 5 using prehand. Seems easy but kids do struggle.
I am not sure about Abacus. There is a separate thread on that. But I thought I read somewhere (maybe in the thread) that abacus might conflict with primary maths? eg. number bonding and the need to produce the step by step working to gain marks. -
Hi,
Yes, I agreed with you. But it will depend on the kids.
For my first one, i enrol him when he is K2, but end up he is coping okay under arithmetically but in term of understand the analyse of problem sum, he is still weak but concept wise still acceptable.
As the girl in K1, just enrol her and now she is learning to count. She is more of playful type and i will need to read the instruction to her. Will see her progress as it go along.
For some centre, they will enrol kid when they know how to count from no. 1 to 10 before take in the student. -

My son has the same problem. The teacher related to me that CTM just makes him feel so frustrated. But my girls enjoy CTM. I was having this conversation with her that I wonder if it's because of my son's earlier exposure to Kumon that make him more arithmetically inclined???? That's why he has a barrier towards CTM questions. :?Monster Mummy:
My K1 just started level 3 this week. Yes, she needs people to read the instruction to her at this stage. But she is fairly motivated to quickly complete her enopi homework. She is also the playful and chatty type....As the girl in K1, just enrol her and now she is learning to count. She is more of playful type and i will need to read the instruction to her. Will see her progress as it go along.
