I’ve a couple of qns and wonder if someone can help.

a) What happens if a student graduates from NUSH with a diploma but results not good enough to enter local U? Then what?

b) For A level, it’s possible to retake as private candidate. What about for NUSH diploma?

for students who finished Year 6 NUS High :

is it common to see students jump straight directly into Year 2 or Year 3 NUS Electrical / Electronic Engineering Faculty, thereby skipping the initial, first 2 years of Engineering studies ?

normally, roughly how many students per batch when reach Year 6 : able to skip either 1st or 2nd year NUS Engineering ?
assuming that 1 batch of intake from Sec 1 constitute about 7 classes of (20 to 25 students), per class
skip first year, or skip second year ?
What is the difference required, between skip 2nd year vs. skip 1st year ?

Secondly, everyone who is good enough to be promoted to Y6 will almost certainly be good enough to be accepted for a place in local U. In the rare event (and the impression I get is this is really rare) a student is not accepted into a local U, the school has the option to appeal on his behalf if he exhibits good qualities, for instance leadership. If everything fails, he can still apply to private or overseas U as NUSH diploma is well-recognized globally.

This is what I understood. Others please correct me if I'm wrong.

Just to add, I had a good experience today. The staff was nice and addressed my concerns adequately. There was also a Y4 boy (mabbe someone's child here ) who was forthcoming and gave me invaluable information.

It will certainly benefit anyone who has NUSH in mind as an option. If the school shows support for a student who unexpectedly under perform, that would be considered a good school regardless of how many top students they produce.

Students are only exempted from a module if they took the modules while they are in NUSH, for my cohort generally no more than 2 to 3 in total. That may be worth 8~12 credits out of 20 required per NUS semester.

It's better to ask specific numbers from the school... but last time I checked it is around 50 (? if I recall correctly) students taking at least 1 module in NUS (generally 1 module at a time) for that semester from the whole NUSH.

If a student does badly for individual modules, they are given a chance to pass (such as through viva, etc.). Failing which, they can also retake that particular module next year.


It is also hard to "unexpectedly" underperform under a modular system, as grades are accumulative, incremental, and mostly based on continual assessment. We would often have a rough gauge of our graduating grade semesters beforehand. This is in contrast to an exam-based system, (e.g. A levels) where all the eggs are in the final basket.
