To test for hand tremors, you stand up straight, stretch your relaxed arms straight in front of you. Do your fingers shiver a little? It may be very slight but you can feel it although most of the time, the tremor is visible. If you are not sure, ask someone else to see if the fingers are shivering. I thought mine moved just very slightly but my sisters said that they were shivering.

If you have tremors, you can also feel it or see it when you are doing something eg. when you are close to picking up a piece of food or signing your signature.

My rapid weight loss occurred when I went on a diet by skipping dinner. I realised that I was losing weight very fast when previously it took forever to lose 1kg, I was losing weight at about 1 kg per week even when I cheated and had dinner subsequently. From 48kg, I dropped to 42kg within 6 weeks.

I did experience more frequent bowel movements like you.

If you are in doubt, do go for a blood test. You will be able to know the result within a week. My cousin had hyperthyroidism but didn’t know it until it was serious. She had bulging eyes and swollen neck. I can’t remember how long her treatment took but it was at least a year or 2 for the bulging eyes and swollen neck to go away.

      The doctor said it’s hereditary.

I think the symptoms vary from person to person. Even among my sisters and me, we have different symptoms eg. I feel hot all the time even with the air con at 21 degrees but my third sister didn't feel that way. She said hyperthyroidism gave her diarrhoea due to the high digestion rate but my fifth sister and I don't experience that. My third sister and I got heart palpitations but my fifth sister didn't get that.

The common symptoms that all of us share though are hand tremors and rapid weight loss. When I went to the doctor, hand tremor was the first thing he checked too.
OT, rains, you have 5 sisters? Nice!

Isn't seaweed high in salt content?

Haha, ya, but anything that is yummy is always unhealthy. 😉

Continue to eat them in moderation. My understanding is that seaweed is the one that contains incredibly high amt of iodine. That was the only food item that I stopped eating when i had relapses. What happened was many yrs ago, i was elated that my hyperthyroidism was under v gd control after 1 yr of medication. I gobbled up those 100 tiny packets of Japanese seaweed within a week to celebrate (i LOVE seaweeds and it wasnt easy for me to abstain from it for one yr). 6 mths later, i suffered relapse! Since then, i dared not consume excessive seaweed anymore. Lol!

              :thankyou: for the assurance.

Does a thyroid patient need to take medication for the rest of his life?

Like what rains had shared, it really varies with individual. My sil didn't suffer any relapse. But for me, I did. So the doctor recommended just half a tablet daily for control. Regular blood test is a must. I am also relieved that I didn't get bulging eyes.

Symptoms for hyperthyroidism include: hand tremors, rapid weight loss due to high metabolism rate, feel hot, temper flares, fatigue. They happen bcos the thyroid gland releases too much hormones.
My hubby is very bad, when my temper flares up too often, he will say, \"I think your thyroid problem is back, better see the doctor.\"

Jennifer, the GP who did your blood test didn't ask you to stretch out your hands?

Is there a possibility that the thyroid disorder is caused by diet, not hereditary? And once the diet is correct, the thyroid becomes normal?

My disorder is Graves' diseases - a type of auto-immune disease.

                        hi dimsum,

Yes, 5 sisters and the list is not exhaustive 🙂

My 5th sister also has graves disease. When she first told me over sms, I'd thought she meant 'gravely' disease and asked her 'Do you have cancer?'

She asked me to google for autoimmune disease and I said 'it sounds good. Can automatically immune you from disease'.
