Thans for the advice, ngl2010. Can you elaborate a little bit more on the \"history answering technique\", is this give during the lecture to the boys?

Also for the past year papers, so far, I've only seen Chinese past year papers

        :thankyou:
        Hi Keborah,

The boys were given handouts that teach the techniques like \"Source-Based Skills: How to use sources - Inferring Purpose\", \"Essay Writing Skills - Explaining Factors\", etc. The boys were taught too. Nowadays History is no longer all about memorizing but more on critical thinking.

For all subjects, there will be formative and summative tests. Look out for results of formative tests. If the result is not good, that means the boy doesn't understand the topic so the boy needs to close the gap. History also has formative tests. If gets bad results for summative tests, it is too late already because the result will be taken into account in GPA calculation. So the best opportunity to catch the boy's weakness is through observing his formative results.

Your boy can photocopy RI past year papers (all subjects) from the library. However, there is no answer given so he must either compare with his friends or give it to teacher for markings.

Please note that there is a notice in the RI library that RI past year papers are for current RI students and disciplines will be meted out to those who give the past year papers to outsiders or non-current RI students.

Students can join Debate is a Core or Merit CCA, in RI..

          iFF,

According to 2015 students' handbook (see image) Debate is Core CCA. However, last night I asked DS and he said he ever heard that Debate can be a Merit CCA. Is Debate as Merit CCA an exception on case by case basis? DS also told me he heard somebody is taking Waterpolo as Merit CCA instead of Core CCA. Another exception case?

Yes, Debate can be Merit CCA for those who are keen in this , but could not get into the Debate Core CCa. Those in merit , if the boy is good and can perform, he can convert from merit to core in subsequent year.... This is what I was told during the orientation .

Hi experienced parents with sec 2 kids n above or senior boys ,

My son is in Sec 1 and he is still quite lost in what can he read up or work on to revise for tests and exams other than his notes from school. He is not having any tuition since we also have no idea what help he needs yet n so many subjects. Any advises on what can he work on for each subject?

Chinese and eng- assessment books necessary? Don't seems to see any ard in popular
Math - IP math by Shinglee is the only one we can find so far.
History - RI history is like a mystery to me.. v different from mainstream for sure and even other IP schs it seems.. šŸ˜“
Geography and science - any good guides or assessments books (not really to do but get a good feel of how qns in test are like) to read up on ....

                  Thanks and appreciate your help!

                  Hi Love4learning,

My son is in Sec 2 this year. Here's what I remember from his Year 1.

English: There is a grammar editing for MYCT. His previous English teacher asked us to buy any upper secondary grammar editing book. She recommended the following book:
Upper Secondary English Editing by Alexa Estelle D
                  Publisher: Fairfield book publishers
I am kiasu so I bought 2 other books. It is quite fast to finish a book. I think about 2 days for a book? I couldn't remember what other topics were tested but we didn't buy any other books for English.

We didn't buy books for other subjects. School notes are enough.

Chinese: Sorry I don't know how DS studied.

Maths: The teacher will give supplementary worksheets. Please make sure your son does those. No other books is necessary. That Shinglee book is also not necessary.

History: Your son needs to study the techniques. If have time, read the handouts for background knowledge. I think it is still possible to get good grades even if don't read History handouts in Year 1 šŸ˜‰ But make sure your son knows the techniques to do source-based questions and essay (sorry I can't remember essay is semester 1 or 2).

                  Geog and Science: Read handouts.

For all subjects, your son can do the RI past year papers and give it to the teachers to mark. However, some teachers may not mark if too near to MYCT because they are overwhelmed with so many past year papers the boys submit.

Teachers will also have consultation time. Look out for it and make use of it.

                  All the best!

Thanks ngl2010 so very much!!! :thankyou:

Eng, I will go look for the books. Any recommendation on Comprehension guides?
Math, so far he has been doing all supplementary worksheets.
For chinese, I also dunno what on earth he is supposed to do so he just read up his past worksheets.
History, any guides for the techniques? He has been reading all his handouts n notes so far.
Where can we find RI past yr papers? available fr school?

                  Thanks!

English: Sorry, we didn't buy any Comprehension guides. DS only relies on school notes.

History: How is his formative and summative? If his grades are ok, then that means he already mastered the techniques. You don't have to worry :boogie:

RI past year papers can be photocopied from RI library. Just go to photocopy machine and he will see some students photocopying there. He can ask them where they get the papers. Usually nearer to MYCT and EOY the photocopy queue will be long. šŸ˜‰

Hello all again! Just received message on the nearing PTMs.

Are these sessions useful and fruitful towards improvements, or are they really general?

I am wondering whether how well the subject teachers know the individual students, especially the Year 1s who are only in school for 4 months.
                        :scratchhead:

Any comments? Or things to take note?
