Unless you want her to grow up blaming you for not treating her protruding teeth early so that she had to wear them during her teenage or adult years (the horror, the horror...), better fork out the money and do it early. Are these still her milk teeth?
She is P4, so no longer her milk teeth. But 5K is a hefty sum. I need to figure out which bank to rob first...

Note also that sometimes after removing the (ugly) braces, your child may still have to wear retainers that are removed when they have to eat/drink, etc. These are to ensure that the adjustment is permanent; that the teeth will not revert to original positions after removing the braces. The retainers are not permanent; they will be removed maybe after some months to a year, when the dental professional says ok.
ADD: Retainers may restrict mouth movement and thus result in them being unable to pronounce certain words properly. -
I only put on braces at the matured age of 24 yo.
Nah, no need parents to pay lah, can do your braces even in 20s or 30s. Get those white colour type of braces, not obvious, can’t even detect braces from close shot photos
Retainer isn’t for life. My orthodontist said only need to wear at bedtime for a duration of 2 years after you removed your braces -

Errr... I am quite certain retainer is for life. Other than advised by the orthodontist, my friend who supplies dental materials to dental clinics also told me the same thing (she had her bracers many years ago and didn't put on retainer and now her teeth move again and regretted not heeding advice and so she specifically told me \"cannot be lazy, must follow orthodontist's advice!\")
Yes, retainer is for life.I have been wearing it since 1997 every night. -

My daughter only has slightly misaligned front teeth. She was in Sec 1 when she asked the dentist during her yearly checkup in school for a referral letter(hey, I didn't ask her to, ok? She did it out of her own vanity).
I checked around the dental services (NUH, NDC, & NTUC Dental, private clinics, etc, etc.). Alexandra is the most reasonable. Quite capped at around S$3K and not student dentists, unlike at NUH & NDC. And you don't pay all at one time, only over 2 or 3 yrs. And the 1st visit is only S$6.50? Consultation with senior dentist/consultant. Braces are like those from private clinics, with colours changeable every time they go for adjustment.

My childhood impression of a school dentist is she is an Agent from Hell... It was always so painful (very rough handed and fixing the teeth in the mouth as if like fixing nuts and bolts in a WC water tank) when I was called up by them for checkup. I think everyone in my class shivered when one sees a prefect entering the class with that coloured dental card. My half a dozen siblings (same school) nowadays still joked about those \"plumber dentists\" during school days...
You were very unlucky. I had good experiences with my school dental nurses. Every time I got called up to go for check-up, I'll be back soon; kinda like go toilet only. I would barely sit in that chair for 5-10 mins and I'll be done already.
Later in adult life also about the same experience with private dentist. So I took my DD with me when she was a toddler on one of my check-ups and we were in and out in no time at all.
On the other hand, my DH hates dental check-ups. Due to his \"dentist's nightmare\" teeth, he doesn't get the chance to breeze in and out of the clinic and his wallet also feels very \"breezy\" afterwards. :lol: Thank goodness I didn't ask him to bring my DD with him.

It's different now. In fact, i've heard rave reviews of the pediatric dental services at national dental service. The consultant that we saw at Alexandra Hosp was v detailed when he questioned & discussed with my then 13yo on braces, giving her the full facts & procedures and leaving the decision for her to make. I think it was truly tactful & considerate.

About braces from referral of school dentist, heard that the queue can be as long as 2 years??

PS: Young children's first dental visit is very very important. If it turns out bad, then it will be very tough to woo them back to a dental chair the next time. ...
We didn't hv to wait long for appointment. 3weeks from timed of phone call, and the next appointment in 1 mth. Braces are not emergencies, so that time frame was ok.
When i called around, yeah, the waiting time at national dental centre (NDC) & NUH was like 1 yr or so. And those cost more than Alexandra - like S$4k to S$5k onwards since there were some other costs not added in that we'd need to pay per visit, whereas these were all-inclusive in the alexandra pkg. And in NSC & NUH, often we'd get students, but at Alexandra, its all seniors/consultants n yes, we can request for the dentist we want.

My DD has a few teeth now that are growing misaligned due to lack of space in her mouth. These are permanent teeth. Does thi$ automatically mean she’$ doomed to need brace$? And that basically instead of saving for her education I must now also save for her teeth?
btw I hated my pri school dentist - EVIL BITCH she was! :x
