CIP hours at Secondary School

I am a mother of a new Sec 1 pupil and till now I am still not exactly sure of the CIP hours. Is 40 hours a year compulaory what could be the consequence for not able to fulfill this target? Do our sec students usually able to fulfil this requirement? What will happen for students who could not meet the target? Do they carry forward to following year ?do parents have to look for avernue to perform the CIP or school will arrange? :?

I can’t remember the exact no. of hours but I thought it was 30? Maybe they changed it.


I think if you cannot fulfill the no. of hours required, you will fail Civics and Moral Education (CME). Is the subject name correct? CIP is a big part of it. No partial grade is awarded for CIP. It’s either get the min. no. of hours or fail. On the contrary, they don’t reward you when you do more (this is not counting any other awards you get if you excel in community service).

Don’t fret. The teachers and school do NOT want to fail the students. They will check and constantly remind them to go for the activities they have signed up for. Sometimes, the teachers will go along (to fulfill THEIR OWN CIP hours). If the students still cannot make it, the school will find "makeup" activities to help salvage the grade. I have never come across any student who has failed CIP.

Besides doing activities organised by schools and their external partners, your child can also do community service outside of school. Just remember to get proof that the hours were clocked in, doing what, when, where and with whom. Must be official; cannot have parent’s letter. Kind of like a certificate. Remember to give a copy of this evidence to the form teacher.

I’m sure that if you ask the teachers in charge of CIP, they can tell you more.

My son told me that they have to clock 40 hours in 4 years, ie. 10 hours per year. But the school told them that in order to get scholarships, awards etc. you need 100 hours in 4 years. So they plan to do 25 hours this year.

I am not sure about other schools. But in their schools, some of the CIP has to be initiated by the students, not the school. So far, he and 3 other friends have taken time to do 4 hours of CIP last month. Yes, and it's student initiated, not through the school. After which, a form needs to be filled up by the organization which they perform the CIP with and the data has to be validated and updated by the school for the individual student.

Hi Lizawa, kind to share what CIP work has your son initiated, and how they engaged the party? Also, do you know whether they any fix list of organization which could grant CIP hours? Can the party be ones primary school?
