You are right tidiness is another thing. Getting him to complete the work already took a long time. How do you get your child to do the thing he don't like.Mine always end up with power struggle.

What is the duration of the short break ? So 15 questions you gave him 3 breaks?

He don't seem able to organise himself well eg pack own school bag, responsible for his homework. Like to do last minute haha.

My grouch with DS has always been his handwriting. It's all over the place. Sometimes, I can't really figure out what he's writing. Until I saw his test papers. Quite a world of difference. At least legible. Of course, it took some time to get there. I suspect he puts in minimal effort for \"unimportant\" written work. So I've learnt to pick my battles - nag only when numbers/alphabets can't be read, not clear if alphabet is capital letter or not. I used to nag about a lot more.

Do you have a fixed schedule for each day? Something that he has agreed on & can see? That helps too. DS' schedule is on a board in his room. If he argues about the work I set, I remind him it's something we discussed and agreed. But of course, there'll be days where I relax and deviate. And to be honest, I've skipped revision on days when I see he's really frustrated. If I push, it'll be major meltdown. I'm sure you can read your son's mood.

Each break is 5 mins. And I keep to that very closely. If he wants a longer break, it's in exchange for longer work session. If he's able to do more questions, I give him a longer break. And that little bit makes him so happy. I know for hyper kids, sweets should be avoided. But I used to let him have a brownie as a reward. I would cut a slice of brownie into 9 parts (really small bite by then) and he'll get a small bite after 3 questions. Or a page of English work.

By the way, the 15 questions are MCQ kind. If it's problem sums, I used to get him to do 6 to 9 questions. Too much and it would lead to protests, very loud kind.

How old is your son? When DS was still in P3/4, I had to rummage his bag everyday to check for homework. But by the time he hit P5, I didn't have to rummage anymore. I just ask him to think carefully if he has homework. There will be lapses, normally on Fridays. His immediate answer is always don't have. I just stop him and ask him to think carefully. And he literally stops what he's doing and tilts his head to think...

A suggestion: instead of checking his bag, you could make him check his bag in your presence. Make him take everything out and check while you watch. This will hopefully build the habit and shift the responsibility to him eventually.

I used to set a kitchen timer for breaks so that each break wouldn't stretch. If not, a 5-min break would always last 15 mins!

:snuggles: I understand. I went through this with DS some years back. But it will get better as they get older. Mine is not completely indie but he's a little more focused to get his homework completed. Whether is completely neatly is another story. And I still need to check on him to make sure he's not odd in his own world sometimes. Especially when it's something/subject he doesn't like.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! mine also....he is very disorganized. He will never pack his own bag and he also dunno when to submit his work. He doesn't seems to bother about homework too.

My girl is already Sec 4 and I have tried desperately to get her to check her own bag + homework!!! Still no success! There is a huge pile of worksheets/exercise books on the floor beside her schoolbag and it’s almost reaching her knees. Yet she is still not clearing the pile despite my constant nagging. I’m so afraid of looking through them - bet there are lots of assignments/homework/portfolio NOT completed.

Ok! DS was definitely not checking his bag of homework nor packing his bag when he was in lower primary. No effort at all. I think it could be transition from pre-school to primary school. He's packing his bag now...once a term! :yikes:

Everyday after my kid finished his homework, I will starts my repeating words on check on your school time table, handbook on what you needs to bring to school. If not sure, check with your classmates. Every night…;( it’s works but I am very frustrated as his younger sibling will be automatically doing it without I’ve to keeps reminding him.

If a child is hyperactive & memory no good (eg : can remember only 2 to 3 sentences out of 8 sentences in show & tell, inspite of 3 days intensive coaching child), any remedy ?
