Your maid is NOT suitable for employment in Singapore if she cannot speak/understand Basic English or her own language. You will only live to regret it. You may give her a month's time but if she still cannot make it, better replace her while you can.

If your maid cannot understand anything, she will make mistakes and you will have to guide her constantly. This will stretch you too much and you will become stressed and frustrated. Your maid will become stressed with having to learn things she cannot understand / read.
If you are still too kind to let her off because you want to give her the chance to learn, you will become frustrated constantly, there will come a time when you will lose patience and will scold her.
If you lose patience with your maid constantly, you will not be in the frame of mind to guide your children effectively plus your maid will start to think of looking for other employers and will consult her friends on facebook and her agent. These people WILL SURELY ADVISE HER WHAT TO DO and their methods will be unscrupulous ranging from asking for transfers to running away to MOM or NGO's with claims of \"verbal and emotional\" abuse etc (anything they can say).

Your kindness to give people time to learn and catch up isn't going to count very much at the end of the day when you find yourself embroiled in a whole lot of mess with MOM or agent.

What will be worse is that the maid who is trained by you so painstakingly will gain experience from you such that she can command a bigger salary by the time she is ready to say goodbye but no thanks to you...
Thank you Mummy for your reply. We spoke to our agency last week and looking for a replacement for her. Whatever you said is 100% true. Every night after work she made me repeat instructions for the nxt day again though i already told them on my off days ๐Ÿ˜ž Since i need someone to be physically present at home for my kids during my working days, i am patiently waiting for 1 to 1 replacement. Hopefully i will get one soon.

Thanks again !

Lokpry,

We were in a similar situation with you. The maid is a minority and has her own mother tongue. We found out only after we seek help from a native speaker to teach her which end up they don't understand each other even though they were from the same country. We even tried to teach her word by word even when she can't read and write. Almost a year...fruitless... It doesn't make things better with her inability to remember well. I write about it here http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum ... 49&t=83256

On hindsight, we should be firmed to transfer her earlier. I think as a non SAHM, don't waste time further with her.

Hope my share of experience helps..
I include the translated version right below the English version so it looks something like this:

English version of rule 1
Bahasa version of rule 1

English version of rule 2
Bahasa version of rule 2

I do the same for the timetable so that there will be a consolidated cover page for the entire week with annexes of the daily timetable with translation next to it.
Hi Mummies,

I just got a new maid and have the similar query. But the problem is she don't even know to write in her mother tongue also ๐Ÿ˜ž

Its only a week she is with us. As i am working 12 hrs i need her to fetch/drop my 2 kids from school, tuition, etc.. I am worried how would i manage if she cannot write on her local language? Also, as i have only 1 hr time with my kids on my 4 working days before they go back to sleep, i need to spend that valuable time by checking home work, timetable or other important study matters. I cannot always tell her what to do the next day...Seems she also don't got a strong memory.

My son in P4 and daughter in P1 and i need a more independent maid to help me until my son's psle. I am confused if i am rushing her too much. Please suggest if that is ok to replace her now or can give her a months time?

thank you !
HI ALL PLS HELP & GIVE ADVICE TKS!!!

Hi all, kindly help as I'm new & got bad experience.. HAIZ..
1. I got a maid for my parents and is from Philipines, overall she is good but after 6 months I found she steal money and keeping Contraceptive pill. So we decided to send her back to agency. She have 1 off day / month.

2. We got a replacement and added some more money for this New Mymar maid. Which stated she got experience. But when the very 1st day she is here i already feel she got attitude problems and yes i'm right. She can sit and do whatever she like, when question her she act blur or black face. I should upload her photo her and let u all see how she sit. And worst is her bio-data work experience is fake!

She is only with us 14 days now, and after urging with agent they allow to replace another one for me. But I have no confidence with this agency anymore.

HOW CAN I GET BACK MY MONEY?
Can I post myself and get her a new employer?

TQVM FOR READING ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Singleminded
HOW CAN I GET BACK MY MONEY?
You will have to go through the small claims tribunal and present all your arguments and evidence that the agent HAS NOT FULFILLED CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT OR THAT THE AGENT HAS SOMEHOW VIOLATED WORK PERMIT CONDITIONS BY BRINGING IN UNSUITABLE MAIDS WHO FALL UNDER THE DESCRIPTIONS PROHIBITED BY MOM UNDER ITS GUIDELINES. You need to READ YOUR CONTRACT line by line carefully to see if you can find a loophole somewhere or if there is clause that gives you a foothold to establish a case against your agent. You fight it out from there. However, Your agent has dutifully given you a replacement and you have accepted one time already so it means that they have fulfilled their part of the bargain. Besides they can also say that you should give your helper at least 6 months learning period. They can counter argue. So as I see it, it is quite difficult to get your money back and you may not even succeed in the end.

Can I post myself and get her a new employer?
Well, we hope you won't do it because you will be passing your problem to another employer. The new employer will ask for a reference, what will you say? That Your maid is good? Then that would be misrepresentation & a disservice to your fellow singaporeans. If you say your maid has bad attitude, there won't be any takers.

Your best bet is to
1. return the present helper to the agency and get a new replacement.
2. IN the meantime, pray hard that the new replacement will turn out well.
3. Also report to MOM about your present helper's attitude and the agent which continually supply you with unsuitable ones.
4. Ensure that MOM has a record of the helper's poor attitude and the agent's name. The next time some other employer complains, a case can establish against her and the agent she might even be prevented from working as FDW in Singapore again and the agent will get demerit points.

please note: MOM would be most likely to tell you that \"you need to give your maid at least 6 months to adjust\".

If you manage to get your money back, please share on this blog. We all want to learn.
GOOD LUCK !

When it comes to maids, I think that it is important to treat them with kindness and respect and yet at the same time, maintain a employer-employee relationship and dont let her climb over your head

Easily said than done though.

No one character is the same as the other, one family needs are not the same as the other, no one maid is the same personality, character, integrity, values as the other. :yikes:

Hi Anyhowsay 1,

Yes, the agent agree to return us the Loan money only (Approx $3500) or replace another one but we have to pay the SIP, insurance again. Now I was thinking shall I get the money and find another agency or let them replace another one or keep this one. Overall is her attitude but cleaniness is good. My brother was suggest to change and get the agent to replace. My mum say just keep, she can clean. But I told her every maid will know how to clean, donโ€™t let her take you for granted. Mainly we are unhappy with her as she answer us with Okok not yes/no mdm/sir. Alright is fine, maybe she is new on 1st few days. But after that we realise while watching TV she can lift up her leg on the small table and donโ€™t bother to put down even we look at her. Also for food wise, she only cook her own veg as she donโ€™t like our food! So I told my mum that we have to please and buy her food that she like only?! And in her bio-data, it mention she know how to cook but she know nothing. Last few days the worst! Our house change aircon, so those workers is here. She just walking around and donโ€™t bother to clean those dusty things that we have to move out for them to done up the aircon. I have to tell her and she started slowly to clean. I went downstair to get some drinks for the guys, when back she is sitting at the sofa and lift up her leg again on the small table! SO HOW TO KEEP THIS ONe? PLS ADVICE! TQVM Everyone and a Good Sunday ahead!

Hi Matthewljk,

For the first maid, I really like her and trust her lots.
As she is so decent and honest to me and my family.
We chat like friends.
I even help her to bring some foods, toys and old clothing when iโ€™m at Manila holiday.
But what she did really dissappointed me and i struggle to keep or let her go.
So we are actually not cruel to maid.

If you are happy with the agent, then go ahead to get the replacement maid from them, ie if you decide to change. Otherwise, take the refund and go to another agency. I have my regular agencies so I will get my replacement through them.

I also pay the insurance and SIP when I change maid. Insurance refund is pro-rated so take note of the time line.

Thus far, my maids have always been well-mannered.

Not all are competent and based on daily interactions, will try to determine if it is due to poor attitude or ability. I do keep those who fall short due to ability.
