      winth:

My colleague, his mum was a nurse and she believes alot that it's a mindset that we put the children in. It's like saying, hey, your eyes have problems and you need a pair of glasses. So, the child will condition their mind that IT'S TRUE that their eyes are 'spoilt' and need glasses for them.

Her children were in primary school when the nurse from school (after eye examination) told her that her children need glasses cos they are now short-sighted. And glasses need to be prescribed soon before their condition goes worse!

His mum didn't follow this set of prescription and worked on telling her sons that their eyes are okay, and they just need to rest when their vision blurs from reading/PC.

Her children are now in their early 20s and well, they are perfect eyesight.

Sometimes, it's really all in the brain.
      Thanks, winth for sharing.

you are not the 1st one who told me similar story.
Minus lenses can actually worsen the myopia. That's why I still didn't let my daughter wear a spectacle (myopia since k1) until now, like what your colleague mum did. but it didn't stop the degree (eye ball) from growing either. Now she is 270 at p2.

Although it didn't affect her daily life so far (just squinting, but still can see whiteboard sitting at front row in school, swiming, dance, etc),
I am struggle to find a solution as I am not sure if I am doing a good or bad things for my only child by against the main stream. Seeing more and more children wearing a glasses after going to p1 is such a painful sight.

I am thinking of the orth-k, thinking of eye drop, but they are so invasive. We don't know the long term side effect to the eye yet.

rather than accepting the fact that singapore has 80-90% of myopia rate, Isn't it really no way to control myopia?
Has anyone use eye excercise or TCM-accupunture to get better?
I heard singapore eye center has a computer program, called neuro-vision. anyone tried before?
      pls share your view here.

If you want a super light pair of glasses, I recommend SwissFlex but it also means that it is so light that sometimes she may not feel that it is there.

Monitor the situation...if it goes up too fast, then you need to take other measures.
Thanks for the advise. Took DD to the optician for a proper check and found that her power is already 200 deg! The optometrist said that I should have brought her earlier. Strange that the school health check did not indicate that she required glasses although her vision was 6/9 since P1. 6/18 this year and only then they recommend glasses. Will need to monitor her as kids who start with higher power apparently tend to increase faster too. What kind of other measure would you suggest?

This point of view is very interesting. Always believed that leaving the myopia untreated (i.e without getting specs) would just make it worse. My DD has had 6/9 vision since P1. Managed without specs. Now in P4 it has deteriorated to 6/18 so am getting her specs. Was told that I should have started her with specs earlier. Any ideas to improve vision would be appreciated. Does the pinhold specs that I saw mentioned help reduce myopia?

As long as the eye ball keep on growing, the myopia can be worsen no matter you put on glasses or not.

pinhole specs will not reduce myopia. it just help to see better (with limitation). I don't think any tech right now can reduce myopia, right now.

What I was talking about was \"Control\" myopia.

To control myopia as my child's goes up exponentially, I put her on Ortho-K. It is actually not invasive and similar to wearing hard lens for anyone having myopia. However, the main difference is the convenience in the day, perfect vision and free from all external help. That makes life so good and normal especially for active children. But the main motivation was to control the myopia from climbing rapidly.

I asked the optometrist about the Ortho K and she was not in favour of it as she said it does not correct the problem and as soon as the child stops wearing the lenses, the myopia comes back. Did your child expereince any difficulty with having to wear the lenses every night e.g. accidental scratching? discomfort?

Optometrist indicated that power will probably increase significantly. Hoping not too fast or too much!

I got a few requests to recommend my Ortho-K opticians, so I thought I'd share my contact here. I know this may not be the right place to post this, but I don't know where :? So, sorry monitors, if you have shift this to elsehwhere.

Please note that I have no interests in this optician's business, and I won't even know if you had gone to him for consultation or not. I am solely a customer. 4 of my kids have used his services for the last 3 years and we are very happy. All of them can see with 6/6 vision now. If you are wondering what Ortho-K is, please refer to my earlier posts.

I post this here because I seldom login to KSP nowadays, and thought it'd benefit those who would like to try.

My oldest was having a 100 degree increase in myopia ever 2 months when he was 9. Now it has come down to 200 or 175 from 300 degrees. The rest are at about 100 degrees. Might have come down but I did not experiment (because it is quite a lot of work to do). And since I started them on Ortho-K the moment they are diagnosed short sighted, their sight don't increase, as the lenses act as 'braces'. One big thing is to service them often and make sure good hygiene is observed ALL the time.

Andrew at Optical Point (he is the boss), 96170569. I think he has 11 branches. Tell him the family with 5 kids recommended you. It will cost anything between $1500 to $2000, I think. I've tried a few other OK experts but he is one of the pioneers, and he attends to his customers personally. Very careful and thorough. Remember to service your lenses frequently. He does it free for me, and I think it should be the same for all customers.
