Good academic results = Good future ?

I was about to start another thread by asking \"Will you show your report book to your children?\" But since we are talking about result here I will just chip in.


I am one who got more red than blue in my whole 6yrs of primary school exam result. I must say my report book is \"very colourful\". I don't know what will happen if I show it to my dd. Will she get the wrong message? I'm still keeping it in my drawer.

I still want to push her to get good result and really don't want her to think like \"hey, last time you also didn't get good result what? Then why should I?\"

:lol: I showed it to them and told them that I failed my english in P1 and my position in class is always the last few. The message to them is not to be like mummy so they need to work harder.

i still have my kindergarten report card :imanangel:

i do show my ds1 my report book, but my purpose is to draw him to the many similar comments i got over the years ie 'very quiet' which i am not very proud of. of course i will also show him comments on 'very hardworking' :imanangel: so as to show him that i did work hard for these results. similarly, i showed him dh's so-so report book, with emphasis on comments such as 'a capable leader' and 'need to work hard on blah blah blah' to show him that although the dad's academic records were so-so, he is doing well enough to support the whole family cos having the correct attitude is key. my benchmark to son is not to attain my records, but to match the dad's, which ds1 will happily go :boogie: when he sees his dad's marks and can confidently said that he can do better.

I suppose good results open more doors of opportunities but do not guarantee success, not forgetting that the definition of "success" is very subjective. Many other factors also play a part in getting the "dream job". Eg connections and sometimes looks as well… we live in a very complicated and realistic society…

My results when I was in school were so so. Got into the top class but ended up being at the bottom of that class. But what I excelled in were projects and organising activities and fund raisers. And oh yah, debate. The comments that were in my report books were the same year after year. They were all along the lines of 'have potential', 'delightful student with leadership qualities', 'need to apply herself academically' and the ever famous 'room for improvement'.


Did not go to a local U cos could not get into the discipline that I was interested in. Basically my results were really borderline. My dad went ballistic when I chose not to go to Uni. I thought I will end up in some boring 9-5 job. Never dreamed that I will be able to own a car much less a pte apt.

Call it luck or whatever, but I remember going for 4 interviews when I started looking for a job and I got offers from all 4. I consulted my Dad on which to go for and he told me local large conglomerates more stable. But I chose a Japanese MNC instead. From then on it was 1 MNC after another. Worked and furthered my studies at the same time. And by the age of 25, I was earning a 5 figure salary, at 26, I bought my 1st apartment. At the age of 32, I burned out and left the corporate world to start my own business and this is where I am now. Happy, contented, satisfied but not resting on my laurels yet.

I believe there are those that simply cannot study but will excel in the working world. While working, I have seen my bosses hiring based on academic credentials (PHD, Scholars, etc) only to have this person being a NATO. And seriously, a lot of us hate to run projects with such people as they tend to have a lot of hindsight and very little realistic foresight. (no offense to the PHDs and Scholars here hor)

So in short, I do not think good results = a successful career. I think it has a lot to do with the attitude and the mindset of the person.

My assumption is that scholars tend to perform better in civil service where their career paths are already predetermined??? For MNCs, it's still dependent on performance. But one observation is that people who can talk well and work well will definitely make it.
