Yes, her FT attached a list for P3&4. Perhaps the list your dd rec last year was for P1&2, that could be the reason she did not get it again this year. Thanks for your recommendations, we will check these titles up. I have no idea what's the highest score in her class/cohort, but her best friend's score of 7.8 already impressed me. 😉

The GE score is just a number. I am not entirely sure of its accuracy.

      Agreed.

        Dear Mummys,

My daughter is taking her very 1st SA soon. May i check with you all how do we prepare her for the coming SA for all the subject involved?

I have received information from the school about the grading system for EL paper 1 and oral exmination last night. In what can we help her to score well in these areas?

        Thanks
My son's homework for EL yesterday was from his Listening Comprehension book...he was supposed to see the picture and describe it, and also to read the passage fluently.

As for Paper 2, I planned a revision time table for SA1...we will go through all the chapters starting from the 1st, using a new assessment book for all the subjects. If time permits, then I will get him to do 2-3 past year exam papers from other schools.

I have exam revision time-table. When my dd was in P1,

For English, I'll often let her read the Red Grammar book and work on customised worksheets based on the content of this book. She'll work on assessment books, other school's past-year papers. She'll practise her oral poem (with actions) almost daily and practise reading a few passages for Oral. If your dd can read with no mistakes and recite the poem fluently with actions, she'll get full marks. For paper 1, I'll scan pictures from assessment book and print out for her to practise writing sentences. Revise spelling words nearer the exam date. For listening, I'll use examples from assessment books.

For Math, work on assessment books (higher-order, non-routine questions), and other school's past-year papers (only Nanyang, Catholic, RGS from 2004 onwards). I'll give a few Math Oympiad questions nearer exam.

For Chinese, write 生字 almost everyday, possibly ahead of the topic taught, work on Higher-Chinese assessment books, and other school's past-year papers. For Oral, I will get her to memorise a few common scenarios for 看图说话 (like canteen, park (or garden), zoo, any occasion (birthday/new year), family activity etc.) and recite the oral poem (with actions) almost daily. Same for chinese oral, no mistakes will guarantee full marks. For paper 1, I'll look for pictures and print out 4 sets of 5 pictures for her to practise (SA1 only, SA2 will be different format). Revise all topics of 听写 a week before paper 1 and revise again for paper 2.

          All the best! 😉

            HI E3,

It’s amazing how you planned the revision time-table.
For Chinese, it’s necessary to work on HIGHER Chinese assessment books. Have to memorize some kai1 tou2, cheng2 yu3 and hao3 ci2 hao3 ju4 too. Same goes for EL I (proverbs, power words).

Will ask hubby to to work on some Math Oympiad questions with son too.

            Thanks for your valuable input.

That was P1 timetable since AT's girl is in P1. This year, we have to cater in compos and show-and-tell. I recorded my reading into my phone and got my dd to listen and memorise. She'll recite in front of the mirror. Her teacher took the outline for review. Hers has no changes but still did not return them. Thankfully, we have the softcopy. Her Chinese teacher did not practise oral with them, besides 看图说话,what is the other component?

                Hi E3,

When my boy was in P1/2, his EL oral was Show-and-Tell. So, I asked him to think of an item and then we wrote out a short script for him to memorize and present. The school teacher doesn’t go through oral practice with them.

Starting from P3, there is a compulsory modular CCA during school hours. For P3, it was swimming at public pool-either Clementi or Bukit Batok. This year is table tennis during Chinese lessons. As such, his teacher has insufficient time to teach the chapters and behind schedule.

For Chinese compo, try to get the child to memorize some kai1 tou2 (beginning of paragraphs) to score higher marks. Same goes for EL compo. Most children spend quite a bit of time starting the first paragraph.

                    Hi Janet,

I like the idea of memorising the openings. Catch the marker's attention first. I have also taught her to conclude well.

It's quite different now for oral exam. For my dd's P1 oral, on top of reciting a poem, there was a passage to read for English. For Chinese, it's 看图说话 and 儿歌朗诵. P1 teachers practised with them. I guess P2 teachers will not, especially for the better classes.

For P2 Eng show-and-tell, kids will choose an item from a list given by the teacher. Not too sure whether it's the same for all classes. Eng T will give each of them an empty template with guidelines in which they have to fill in the Intro, Body and Conclusion. Thereafter, the teacher collects them, vets thru the contents, edits and the kids will memorise from that script.

For Chi compo, I get my dd to copy out a few 'common' scenarios - eg. Helping Others, Making a Mistake, Happy Day, Describing a place/ Person etc once a week. When we have time (which is quite hard to squeeze in nowadays), she'll write one compo that I gave and timed her. I'll include 成语 cos for her school's assignments, they were told that they MUST use the 成语. Nearer SA1, she'll write one compo every alternate day, 1 week before till the actual exam day.

For English, she'll do a quick Mind-map for each picture. Collate all the points and expand while writing. She will use one idiom whenever she could (I let her refer) for each compo. For beginnings, she likes \"flashback\". Same for English, one compo every alternate day, 1 week before SA1.

All these are still in progress, I will know whether these strategies work for her after her paper 1 exams. My main concern is her time-management.

                      E3,

Memorizing the kai1 tou2 for different settings like indoor and outdoor, throw in idioms/hao ci hao ju and conversation and end with a spectacular paragraph will bring marks up for sure !!!

When my son was in P2, he was given a list of items to choose from for Show-n-Tell.

Starting from last week, I made my son do a compo - either situational or picture...by 5th May (EL paper 1), he should have done 6. Not a lot but better than nothing. Time is so tight now. 😢

A mummy of a P6 boy (last year) recommended a English tution teacher to me. This lady is staying nearby Pei Hwa, at Toh Yi Drive estate. Any comments/feedback appreciated?
