Wow, I had always assumed schools like RGPS, because of their popularity with balloting limited to within 1km, will mostly have students from within 1km. Didn't know there are many in the East & Sengkang/Punggol!

Balloting limited to within 1 km : happened in the past (before 2013), when school did not set any cap to control the number of Parent Volunteer (PV), last time.

However, when school started to implement new change like cap maximum number of PV to 20, per batch (after 2012) : notice that lot of vacant vacancies were left un-consumed in Phase 2B, thus carried forward into Phase 2C, thereby allowing SC outside 1 km to enter.

past 3 years : 2013, 2014, 2015, witnessed this new change.

for P1 children, coming in


for children with special need, parents may consider : inform school, before P1 class allocation sorting is done, to give Principal / VP (Admin) sufficient time to prepare & allocate, assign an AED Teacher to the P1 class.
It is good to join Parents Support group : participate in school activities organized for P1 pupils, support & help your child.

On P1 Orientation day itself (30 Dec, 2015) -
can get to meet other parents, same class as your daughter.

may join own class whatsapp group chat (it is useful to join) for support, alert, help one another, eg:
like remind one another which spelling lesson #x or which 听 写 lesson #y is on for next week, or what things to bring for next week Art lesson ?
pupil need to bring water color tube or bring color pencils, or bring crayon, bring apron (don't dirty uniform), bring newspapers, scissors, glue, bring drawing board paper ?
Or if child did not hear clearly Tr instructions : do which start page to which end page of Maths homework (worksheets) to submit back to Tr, etc ?
Or Chinese test coming : cover which unit to which unit ?

can initiate to be the group administrator, to start whatsapp group in own class.
Just ask parents casually around standing outside the classroom on P1 Orientation day, \"Hi, nice to meet you. Have you already joined a whatsapp group, in our class ? If not, would you like to join me ? \"
if the parent agree to join, get her handphone contact.
Soon, you'll be able to gather a few like-minded parents, form a whatsapp group.

After P1 Orientation, in first week of school 2016 Term 1, P1 Form Tr will email to parents, their daily class Timetable schedule.

Each day after come back home from school, may prepare a home time-table daily routine (can use Excel spreadsheet, print it out, paste onto a wall) like :-
start time to end time : bathe, makan lunch, makan dinner

start time to end time : complete all school homework assignment first (school homework take priority), requested by various Subject Tr (English, Maths, Mother Tongue)

start time to end time : learn spelling or learn 听 写, for this week
school have both spelling and tingxie, weekly.

start time to end time : read storybooks (both English & in Mother Tongue), play games (indoor or outdoor), cycle, swim, dance (ballet), play a musical instrument, etc

before your girl go to bed daily, guide & show her to follow class Timetable schedule, pack Textbooks, Activity Workbooks, pack pencil case for next day lessons,
prepare water bottle,

prepare $ for recess-time (max $1.50 or $2 per day will do, also put another emergency $2 spare cash elsewhere, in case she forgot to bring recess time $ one day to school, no need to approach Form Tr to borrow $ for recess).
Teach your girl : if forget to bring $ for recess, may borrow from Form Tr, or from Co-Form Tr, do not borrow from classmates.
(because children don't bring much $ to school)

fyi
if really forget to bring pocket $ for recess that day, can inform your daughter goto Pancake room, eat pancake (free of charge) that day for lunch.
an Officer and her assistant will ask your daughter, which flavor of pancake does she like ? They will cook, on the spot. If one pancake not enough, can ask for more than one helping, eat until full.

prepare glasses (if need be, for short-sighted pupils),

prepare jacket (if P1 classroom is air-con, cold).

Prepare a packing list for her, to follow.
First time, parents can guide child.
Subsequently, watch and observe, see whether she can pack her stuff, independently. If she does it on her own without prompting, hug her, praise her \"Good job done, dear daughter\", give her a motivation sticker (like \"Wow\", or \"Fantastic\"), small award, etc.

After a while, she'll get used to the daily habitual packing routine, gradually.

Was wondering whether it's possible for her to attend Chinese classes even though she doesn't opt it as mother tongue. That's because she has been learning Chinese at preschool and likes the language. Both excited and nervous that she'll be starting primary school soon. Not so long ago I had the same feeling when she started going to preschool. How time flies!

Rgps doesn't offer Chinese, as Third language, a pity.
(a pity, because think many pupils would love to take up 3rd language, if possible : if can handle both English & Mother Tongue)

During designated Total # of hours of Mother tongue lessons allocated per week during school hours curriculum Term time : each pupil can only attend their respective Mother Tongue lessons. (be it Malay / Tamil / Chinese)

perhaps, may bring your daughter learn Chinese outside, at Community Centre (CC).
There are \"Conversational Chinese\" lessons, held at some CC.
may join them.

But, if prefer your dd to attend those Chinese primary school tuition classes that follow closely to MOE textbook syllabus type one Term after another, some CC also conduct.
Some are taught by China Teacher, at CC : content quite good, at reasonable costs too.

if you just want to expose your child towards more Chinese, some CC lessons are quite good.
They break down, by level (P1 to P6).
So, just go to a class, that is appropriate for your girl.

may buy P1 Chinese textbook, from our school bookshop.
our school begin Higher Chinese (HCL) from Primary 1, so we use HCL textbook.

however, since u just keen to expose your girl some Chinese, buy Normal Chinese textbook, will do.

at the CC : Tr teach children how to write Chinese characters, recognize Chinese words, learn how to read Tang dynasty Chinese poems, read short stories in Chinese, teach Chinese vocabulary like fill in the blanks for cloze passages, cover Comprehension in Chinese, etc.


many of our Chinese pupils here would also like to learn Malay : since our neighboring countries (Malaysia, Indonesia) all speak Malay. It is useful to learn Malay.

for Upper primary students, during school holidays in June / December, school conduct enrichment lessons called \"Conversational Malay\" : for Chinese students who are interested to converse in Malay, to sign up for school holiday enrichment programme, since our school does not offer Malay, as Third language.

The aim of Conversational Malay :-
to strengthen Singapore multi-racial compact, to enable pupils to pick up Malay more easily, should they need it for economic, or other reasons in adult life.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I will take her outside for Chinese class as is not offered in school as third language. One other thing I wanted to check was that how do they offer CCAs. And when do they start CCAs in p1. I believe in p1, CCA is not compulsory but most kids would still be taking them, right? My daughter is interested in swimming and drama. How to make sure she gets into those? Once again, thanks for your guidance. Feeling much more confident now.

After your dd join our school, by 2016 Term 1 week 5, P1 parents will be given a list of CCA schedule, for pupils to join (not compulsory)

Interested parents can fill up CCA Form, prioritise 3 CCA in order one by one (what is your 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice Cca) return to Form Tr.

There isn’t any Drama (acting) CCA, for P1.

for swimming CCA : if the CCA weekday / timing schedule is ok for your girl, she can join. All are welcome ! All beginners, can join Swimming CCA.
Swimming Coaches at the pool will assess all pupils, whether who can swim, or not.
beginners : will form one group.
Those intermediate or Advanced swimmers, will form other group.
For those who can swim, the Instructor will ask pupil to show him swim one lap, assess how pupil swim, before assign pupil to the right group for training.

Have not announced which nearest public swimming pool to goto, nearest to Hillcrest location.

All CCA start at 3.30 pm, next year.

is your child taking Malay or Tamil, as second language ?

for Mother Tongue Malay : per level (P1 to P6), only a handful of pupils (small double digit) taking Malay.

eg
at current year, 2015 P4 level -
from our own school : less than 15 pupils taking Malay, as 2nd language.
so what happen is, P4 Malay Gep students who newly join Rgps, can also join in.

at P4 :
some of these new students who join Rgps Gep programme, can come from any primary school.
eg
some are newly transferred in from SCGS, MGS, St Margaret, Marymount, CHIJ Convent schools, Yangzheng, Radin Mas primary, or from Tampines (eg : Junyuan, Gongshang, Poi Ching primary, etc) / Pasir Ris, neighbourhood primary schools, etc.

for those residing far away in Tampines, Pasir Ris area :
although St Hilda primary or Tao Nan primary are much nearer for them in the east, yet some still prefer to choose our Rgps Gep programme (P4 to P6) when offered, as they prefer to attend an All Girls school.
