I consider this a 'betrayal' by one of its own.
I believe this situation does not only exist in RI. How about ACS, HCI...?
Both my dc are Rafflesians from yr1-6 and we are not from the class that CPM refers to in his speech. Do we feel disadvantaged? Yes and No. Yes, when compared to the whole of Singapore, not particularly in RI. Admission to RI is in fact based on merit, just that children who are blessed with more resources have a leg up. This is a national issue, not school specific.
Do I feel envious, angry and disadvantaged just because most people around me are driven in cars while I take the public transport? Do I feel unjustified while others stay in private while I stay in public housing? The answer is NO. If we aspire towards Equality in resources, we may have to consider communism.
Perhaps, CPM = communist party of malaya

As far as I know...RI can be well-attended by kids from elite families...but.... Well, LKY's theory largely is working in a big way here because if the kids are from highly educated parents genes and highly educated parents are doing well professional, it is inevitable that the kids can come from elite families. And we cannot fault them on that because no one can choose which family he is born into. Families can be better off but if the child has no grit to push himself, they cannot survive the learning journey too.
As for elitism, to me, that is a strong sense of entitlement. So far, this is hardly demonstrated from RI as far as I watch from afar. Whatever achievement the kids have made, they also put in a lot of hard work to achieve them. I do not think the kids ever felt that they were entitled to anything except through their sheer efforts.
Then....something struck me on the trigger.... :idea:
It must have been the budget reduction for the top schools by MOE and some parents were not happy with the way it was done without proper explanation. IIRC, it was an impact largely felt by parents from GEP schools and not limited to RI. And seriously, if it was due to this, then I feel that the media has blown this out of proportion because largely, I do not get the feeling that RI has a sense of entitlement to anything, they work hard. And if the P wanted to chide them for that incident internally, I feel it is something internal to RI. It is a dialogue that just need to be open internally, two-ways, since info from MOE was not clear either.
Being elite and exhibiting elitism(elitist) is definitely two different matters. Having more students from elite middle-class families does not necessarily make them exhibit elitism or behave like elitists...but perhaps there are some black sheep speaking in tones that marred the image of RI... :sad: Just to quote more boys schools with high presence of middle-class families, ACI, HCI, SJI, CHS, ST Andrews etc....so all of them elitists and showing elitism? No right? In fact, having more affluent families is a general phenomenon in SG. -

Singapore students score big at international science and maths competitions
SINGAPORE: Students from Singapore have performed well at International Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics and Physics in the months of July and August, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Tuesday (Aug 11).
In the 28th International Young Physicists' Tournament, the Singapore team clinched first place in a field of 27 countries - making them champions for the third year in a row. Koh Jin Ming from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (HSMS), together with Shen Yu Jun, Lee Yu Tse, Wittmann Goh Ghin Fong and Lim Jun Heng from Raffles Institution (RI) represented Singapore in the tournament held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, from Jun 27 to Jul 4.
The Singapore team won three gold medals and one silver medal at the 26th International Biology Olympiad, placing third overall out of 60 countries. Daniel Tan Chee Hian from Hwa Chong Institution, and Fong En Lei Samuel and Cheng Jia Geng from RI won the gold, while Theophila Toh Ying Lin from NUS HSMS won the silver. The competition was held in Aarhus, Denmark, from Jul 12 to 19.
At the 47th International Chemistry Olympiad, Singapore placed eighth overall in a field of 75 countries, winning one gold medal and three silver medals. Li Bingjian from RI won the gold, while the silvers went to Kee Jing Yee from NUS HSMS, Kang Yi Cheng from RI and Lim Song Jie, Bram from Hwa Chong Institution. The Olympiad was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from Jul 20 to 29.
For the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from Jul 4 to 16, Singapore was placed 10th overall out of 104 countries. The team won one gold medal, four silver medals and one bronze medal in the competition: RI's Sheldon Kieren Tan won the gold; Lin Kewei David, Ma Zhao Yu and Tan Siah Yong from RI, together with Dylan Toh Shan Hong from the NUS HSMS won the silver; and the bronze went to Liu Yijia from RI.
Singapore also placed 10th overall in the 46th International Physics Olympiad held in Mumbai India from Jul 5 to 12, out of a total of 83 countries. Chua Yee Shuen Darren from RI (Junior College) scored the only gold, while the four silver medals went to Garett Tok Ern Liang, Joel Tan Shi Quan and Joshua Lim Yong Kiat from NUS HSMS and Peter Yuen Ho Hin from RI (Junior College).
In the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Almaty, Kazakhstan from Jul 26 to Aug 2, Singapore won one silver and three bronze medals, placing 27th overall out of 83 countries. The silver went to Teo Por Loong, Jacob from NUS HSMS; while the bronze medals went to Howe Choong Yin from NUS HSMS, and Feng Jiahai and Pang Wen Yuen from RI.
The participation of students in these international science and mathematics and science competitions is a joint effort between MOE and DSO National Laboratories; Institute of Physics, Singapore; Singapore National Institute of Chemistry; Singapore Institute of Biology; Singapore Mathematical Society; National University of Singapore; and National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, said the ministry.

Can someone pls advise on the process for DSA Sports?
For successful CO candidates, does the school call in advance to notify and then follow up later with email and letter?
Is it the same for WL & rejected cases? Or does the school only send out email & letter for such cases without calling?

Speaking from a child’s perspective, this is a negative stunt for any P to do. Being a very competitive institution, students have to work hard and put in necessary efforts to get in, regardless of environment or any additional help.

He has just discredited all the hard work / efforts made by kids from wealthier families who has scored well in PLSE to earn a rightful place in the school.
Yes exactly, I think this P likes to wayang, taking the moral high ground and blaming everyone for contributing to the so called “elitist mindset” – if this has been festering for some time, he should have taken concrete actions to address his concerns when he first took office in late 2013.
Why need to wayang now?., Is he trying to get into politics or something?

Kuan Hian is the 94th Rafflesian to receive the President's Scholarship, the most prestigious class of university undergraduate scholarships awarded to Singaporean citizens by the government; awardees have to have a strong ethos for Public Service, sound character and a dedication to improving the lives of Singaporeans. Kuan Hian had earlier received the Singapore Police Force Scholarship at a ceremony held last week.
In an interview with the Straits Times, Kuan Hian, who will be studying liberal arts at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, said that he hopes to help those who are 'most vulnerable'.
'Often, they are victims of crimes who are thus most in need of help, or they may be accused persons who are feeling confused or scared,' the aspiring police officer explained. He plans to enrol in a social outreach programme that will look at policies and issues affecting residents in Baltimore.
