All About Music For Beginners & Selecting Instruments

Thanks Dreamaurora for your information.
Okie, I won’t say it for competitive music playing perharps currently now it just equip daughter with a skill. Down the road, after she progress, will see how she is handling and her interest most important of all then shall decide what the next move for her.
Dreamaurora:
If your goal is to give your daughter a chance to enter competitive music playing i.e. joining competitions and festivals, then yes the younger the better as the level of playing of precocious local kids below 12 here is pretty high. And fees are not going to be cheap as you would want an accomplished teacher who also has this same goal. We are probably talking about $50-100 for a single lesson (at teacher's place) and may be more expensive as your daughter gets more advanced.lowchuac2:
Dear all, I'm WC. I very new to this forum and join here.... like to enquire your opinion.. My daughter is coming 3 in this coming Sept 2015. I think of letting her learn violin or ballet, will that be too early? or when is the suitable age to let her start off?
which school can I lookout for? as i come from Low-mid income family, so would be great if the lesson fee is not too expensive. Normally how much is the lessons fee on average?
I always heard people say that when child are young, it better to start off as early as possible....so this come to my mind
Appreciate your all output...:) thanks .....
Best regards....
If your goal is just to equip your daughter with a secondary skill at a pace comfortable for her, then you have a lot more options. You will still need to get a proper teacher which is not going to be cheap as well, but you can easily get a full time music graduate or a teacher with teaching Dips for around $40-60. You can start your daughter a bit later when she's more mentally mature, perhaps at 6 or 7. If following an average of one grade per year, she will still be able to comfortably attempt grade 8 around sec 2 or sec 3. The later start will also allow you to save up more money for quality lessons and instruments.
Music schools in general can be quite erratic in quality of teaching. So if normally people ask me whether to send their kids to music schools, I would advise them to go for the owner/principal of the school or a permanent partner. Those random teachers in music schools are generally quite green and are still in the beginning part of their teaching career. Not to say they are bad teachers, some of them may turn out to be brilliant one day. But personally if finance is not an issue for me, I would pay more for assurance of quality. -

i think 4 years old child it is better to start keyboard first ,and then choose piano or violin
-
hmm I think there’s also more unique instruments worth trying. for example drums. as you know young kids can’t really control their finger muscle that well, maybe can start by working on limb muscles =D plus coordination and rhythm sense… there are many music schools (mandeville, yamaha, cristofori) all have drum class and also guitar, ukulele. for v young kids can try beatnik music net

anyone who is teaching their own kids (esp toddlers) piano?
care to share your experiences? -
Hi everyone,
I would like to share some articles I wrote, about choosing the right instruments to complement your learning journey, as there is nothing more frustrating for a novice than struggling with a bad instrument! Hope this is helpful for all:
