Heard that there were some changes to the syllabus. As such the exam papers that were before 2013 may not be relevant. Can anyone help to verify this?

The short answer is that the past papers before 2013 are still relevant, but it is very important to know the level the student is being tested at, and the specifics of an IP programme.

For upper secondary science subjects, I have found syllabus changes in 2013 to be minor. For lower secondary, the organization and topic headings changed and the content got reorganized. But much of the actual content is the same.

The main thing I have noticed over 6 years of giving tuition is a gradual drift in more schools, particularly in lower secondary, to harder and harder tests. Some of the lower secondary practice tests I made up 6 years ago are still good for some schools, but for other schools, I use them only as a first stage of achievement. The second stage of achievement needs to be upper secondary level for some of the school topics. IP students and parents expect this type of challenge, but it can be tough for an express track student. I have some Express track students actually facing harder tests than IP track students for lower secondary. Many may think those tests are too hard, but the reality is that the students still have to prepare.

So the point is that past year tests may be good preparation, but you also need an assessment of what level of difficulty the student will be facing in their exams.

Another point to make about IP Programmes is that not all IP schools cover the same syllabus. In talking with a lot of parents over the years, I get asked this question a lot. As an example, for upper secondary physics, there are certain topics done in the IP Programme at Raffles Girls that are not done for IP at HCI. These are topics that are part way into the A'Level syllabus. So there is no one single \"IP syllabus\". An IP past year test from one school will not fit the syllabus of another school 100%.
