Do the schools give a T-score calculation base on the kids' prelim results? DD's results are streaming in but we are not sure if it is a norm for schools to do that. I know it will not be accurate but at least it will be a guide.

During DD's time, her teacher told us to multiply her prelim results with 0.75. I think the multiplier is between 0.72 to 0.75. In the case of DD, 0.75 was spot on. Her psle t-score was identical to the guesstimate prelim t-score.

As in all her scores upon 100, total them up and multiply by 0.72-0.75 for a gauge?

Ok thanks![/quote]My kid's school gave mean and standard deviation of the cohort for each subject, so we used that for the school prelim \"T-score computation\". Understand some other schools do that too. For some top schools (not giving names), the teacher told them to add in 5-10 points (due to difference in school vs national level) and that would be their estimated PSLE T-score if they perform at that standard.

2) If sch provides std deviation & mean, then calculate tscore & can add 5~10 points (for certain top schs)

Can parents who have kids taking psle within the last 2~3 yrs feedback which of the above was more accurate for yr child’s tscore?

Number two was never furnished to us since day one.
What works for me is to find out from parents of graduated students of my son school in same banded class to gauge the estimated score range.
It never stopped me from trying out number one ranging from multiply by 0.72-0.75. The score range is pretty wide from one end to another.

If we assume the highest is, say, 280, then most of the #1 kids in each school will be around low 270ish. High 270 used to be able to get one's name on the MOE list.
The rest if the top 10 in school will probably be around 260ish. (Based on high 45k cohort, 3% is only 1350).
If you are able to find out the approx. score among the top 10 in school, you can get a est of the multiplier,

Our school never gave us the std dev although we did have the mean score for each subject. My dd1 2013 PSLE agg is 2 points higher than 0.75 X prelim total. 2 of her classmates who scored the same as her in prelims got 3 points lower for PSLE than their estimates. So maybe accuracy of plus/minus 5 points? Provided the school’s performance is similar to national standards.


However, the top student in her school whose estimate based on prelims was 280 scored at the lower end of 26X and she was not the top student for PSLE. 2 other students who took only 3 subjects scored way better than her although she scored highest in every subject for prelims. Just a side note, from my small social circle, I have noted that generally those exempted from MT score unexpectedly better at the PSLE. I believe MOE has never been revealed how the T-score is calculated for exempt cases. Those of my frens whose kids were MT exempted were all pleasantly surprised by their kids’ PSLE T-scores.

+/- few points not surprising at all considering you only need to improve or lose about 1 mark per subject to see that difference.

Prelims results is only an indication of how prepared one is for the papers at that point in time. Besides, during the period between Prelims and PSLE, a lot of changes can happen.


My niece scored an estimated T-score of 270 for her prelims while her best friend scored 250+ (same school). She had always performed better than this friend since they knew each other. However, when the PSLE results were released, she had a rude shock. Her T-score was 256 while her best friend scored 268.

I also observed from my daughter’s previous school that the PSLE top few scorers were not those who top the school exams. Not sure if this happens in other schools too.

Those who have not done well, don’t feel discouraged. There’s still one month to work hard and do your best.

My dd2 didnt do well for her prelims and her Chinese oral that was on the 2nd day didnt go too well either...but we shall press on and chiong all the way
