Hi gir_gir87, No worries. You will be given an English language Dolch list (220 sight words & 220 related sentences). Dc needs to be able to spell & use these sight words, eventually. Spelling starts Term 1 Week 3.

As per previous post, P1 uses the Holistic Assessment method. In the Holistic Assessment Portfolio, for EL, Speaking, Listening & Writing are tested in Term 1.
1) Speaking - Week 7 Show & Tell
2) Listening - ongoing
3) Writing - Subject-Verb-thing sentence structure is tested
Eg. The boy watches television.
3a) There will be a picture & 2 helping words \"draws\" and \"picture\". Dc needs to write something like \"The girl draws a picture.\"
3b) Another picture with helping words \"grandfather\" \"gives\". Dc needs to write something like \"Jane gives her grandfather a cup of tea.\"
3c) Yet another picture with \"dentist\" \"checks\". Dc needs to write something like \"The dentist checks Tom's teeth.\"

I can pm you the Dolch list and Spelling lists if you like. Let me know.
However, do note that my experience relates to 2013 so things may be slightly different in 2016.

P1 Orientation for Parents of P1/2016 Pupils
This is scheduled for 21 Nov. Take the effort to know the teachers, especially form teacher and HCL teacher. Why? - If you have any questions, it is more efficient to communicate (via email/a note in the school handbook...) to the form teacher early. For instance, HCL teachers may correct a character which looks fine to you; they may mark wrong a 造句/理解问答 答案 which looks alright. If you ask them, they are very willing to share their rubrics. The HCL textbook/syllabus have changed but yes, they are a fussy bunch; what is accepted in enrichment centres may not work for NH.

Uniform
On a separate note, lower primary children have more PE lessons so by all means buy 3 or more sets of PE attire; 2 sets of uniform. School socks are optional. Getting used to the 6-hour days take a toll on children so they do not put on much weight in the 1st 2 years. Uniforms tend to sell out fast (they don't stockhold much & the main office has moved to the east; bookshop lady sells the uniform for them, but she only opens after 0930hrs on usual school days). The queues are super duper long on orientation day - the trick is this, bring a set of your child's current clothes to compare with the samples. Also, prepare your own calculator (to check that they've done their sums correctly) & preferably spare change (to avoid re-queueing when there is a mistake).

Bookshop
The lady is trustworthy and efficient. Her prices are very competitive too. Look through the booklist and decide what you really need. After which you can leave the booklist with the bookshop lady (with your details of course) for her to pre-pack the books, then collect the books at a later date/time. After collection, find a nook, check through everything, then go to her if there are discrepancies.

There will be regular sessions for you to listen to the Principal or meet the teachers. Try to avail yourself. The school will let you know their/MOE expectations. Yes their sharing sessions teach you how to ace exams.

I realised that homework has been steadily increasing and my child needs more and more time finishing them. I went back to work a few months ago and I could not guide and support as much as I would like now as compared to when I was a SAHM. I imagine it’ll only get worse as my child enters upper pri.


So dilemma if I should continue working or go back to being a SAHM. Any parents here could share their experience with NHPS workload and exam preps and how are you coping? Would greatly appreciate!

Congratulations to the P3s shortlisted for the Princess E session on 20&21 Oct. If you do not make it past that round, the school will usually still offer you another test. This enables you to join the 合成班/TAG1. The HCL materials will likely be the same as the GEP children's. Something for you to consider when the time comes.

Hi sunshine05, Unless there is an elder sibling, the school takes a bit of time to determine the House. So yes, P1 requires House T-shirt, which the form teacher will order ensemble as a class a bit later in the year when the information is available. 1 piece is sufficient (meant mainly for Mass Exercise, sizing is different from & bigger than PE T-shirt). Children tend to find House T-shirts the most comfortable. In view of the bad weather this year, for instance, the school allows all to wear PE/House T-shirts everyday of Terms 3 & 4.
