Ruby is simply instructing his brother to refrain from telling her: she wants to enjoy looking for it, perhaps.

The word 'supposed' would change the meaning as it implies that he had in fact told her.

The word 'allowed' is trickier. It possibly also changes the meaning as it implies that Ruby is informing her brother that someone else has instructed that he not tell. In any case, kiasumen is absolutely spot-on that it is an unnecessary word.

Yes, I definitely think so.

I must stress that I am a private tutor, not an MOE school teacher. Therefore, I am not privy to the official answer sheets supplied to the PSLE markers. However, I can reasonably infer that there will be flexibility. If an authorised PSLE marker is in doubt, there will be a senior teacher (and ultimately a moderator) on hand to rule on the matter.

I do not think that the PSLE syllabus or the answer sheets are so micro-managed that they cover all permutations.

What gets students high marks in public examinations such as the PSLE English paper is, in my opinion, a good, solid grounding in the language, rather than memorising specific formulaic ways of doing things, ‘short-cuts’ and last minute September camps and the like.

I am happy to be corrected. I treat corrections as ways for me to learn and do not resent them as challenges, so if any official MOE teacher wishes to question anything I have written such as flexibility in PSLE marking or my suggested answers, then please go ahead; we can all learn.
