All About Full-Time Maids

What kind of due diligence are we expected to perform to ensure that the maid is above 23 years old? Their biodata and passports also state 23 years old. That is not considered good enough?

That's why I find the whole concept of live-in domestic helper is crap. We are expecting human nature to behave differently. This is another claim by HOME found in this article dated 15 July 2015
http://www.home.org.sg/home-mental-heal ... er-duress/
They (the Myanmarese) are paid less than the average monthly salary of S$515. Their median age is 28 years old, compared with Indonesians (32 years old) and Filipinas (36 years old). Some workers are as young as 16 when they arrive in Singapore..
So I have underpaid my young underaged maid cos I paid only $450 which is the standard price across singapore I heard, for 1st timer, no english, no experience teenage maid.
So if HOME finds out I could be charged with illegal employment of child labour. And to think that I believed my agency & my maid when I signed on the dotted line, that my maid was 24 years old.
Yet I have to fight tooth and nail with MOM, show concrete evidence, state my case, make threats, basically making myself a nuisance at MOM just to get a ban on her, not out of spite or resentment but all this, to protect this silly girl from being 'exploited again' and to stop her coming into singapore again to create nonsense for OTHER SINGAPOREANS on promises of EVEN higher salary (after only 8 months work), easy work, nice shopping and rich boyfriends.
Beware that some terms could be twisted in favour of the domestic worker:
- live-in work conditions = \"Exploitative work conditions\".
- different diet = nutritional neglect
- maid sleeping in a room where employer can enter too, employer checking their handphones, employer checking their things = invasion of personal privacy
- not allowing handphones = denying their basic rights
- No off day but paid = social isolation
- No going out but there is an off day, no need to work = social isolation

Depends if you have the rapport with your helper. You like her, she likes you, she will tell you her real age and age doesn't matter.
If you don't like her and she doesn't like you, age becomes a problem.
But once you found out she is underaged and you continue to employ her, I think you may have to hold more responsibility.
Frankly, what can we do? We can only based on passports and bio data. Will we take a plane to their home town, interview her parents, neighbors to check when they are born? cannot leh  -

who runs HOME? keep hearing about them and it just sounds like they are very troublesome people to deal with who are not interesting in finding a solution but to create more problems
Certain people are trying to instigate a collective action of workers against employers in their zealousness to push their one sided perspective at all costs by publicising counter-productive, unfounded allegations, claims, condemning singaporeans of exploiting defenceless workers. Why don't they refer the workers to MOM? Not sure how they do their mathematics, but claiming that 40% of FDW in Singapore not given an off day is mind boggling ..based on what? 670 FDW interviewed? What's our total FDW in singapore?
250,000 to 300,000? How come they didn't speak to maids who don't want off days and want to be paid instead? Or maybe after getting paid for off days they still say they are not given off days??
Why don't they go to Malaysia and make the same claims? See if the Malaysian govt will entertain them.

The self appointed sheepdog of sorts on some misguided mission to rein in all the lost foreign sheep in singapore, is a social worker and is SDP member..as expected.....not happy with certain govt policies. Needless to say, the FDW employers are the ones caught in the cross-fire. -
If a Filipino maid asks for Christmas leave, should I give her on Christmas Eve ( paid leave) and till what time? She said she needs to go church. She has weekly Sundays off and so far , good in her work. She also requested for Chinese New Year off day. That one I am still considering. Her job is just to look after my dad, who is mobile. She been working for about 9 months in Singapore. Was an ex-Sg maid.

If she is good in her work, give her lah what she asks for. Besides your dad is mobile. It's just one day on Christmas eve and one day on Chinese New Year. Build goodwill.
For my Fil maids, I give off day on Christmas eve go church (cos they are catholic must do midnight virgil so she will come back home like 1am). The mass starts at 9pm so off she goes right after dinner. Then one Day of rest on Christmas day, usually they will go church again in the morning on Christmas day. Then I leave it to them if they want to come home what time. For chinese new year also one off day. She can choose to go out with her friends or stay. So far, all my fil maids choose to stay for Chinese New year as we only do house visits & all day long eating so the COLLECTION FOR RED PACKETS for my maids was GOOD MONEY plus NO WORK. Day of rest with MONEY to be made (sometimes can make up to SGD$150), any clever Fil maid would opt to stay with you and do visitation with you.
I give red packets for my relative maids, so they give money for my maids too. Only for maids we are happy with. Those who give us nonsense better give them their day off to do what they pleases. No obligation. -

Fair enough. I just want to make sure that my belief of what is reasonable due diligence is correct and there is nothing more I need to do.Coolkidsrock2:

Ask anyhowsay1, I think she can advise better. -

I would say the same thing as Ashana. Based on what I experienced before, the biggest onus is on Employment agencies to do the checks. Then work permit is given out if MOM is satisfied that due diligence has been exercised. If passport everything showed above 23, not your problem what, if you remain blissfully ignorant. However, if they commit crimes (due to the folly of youth) in employers household, they might get away with it cos of their young age (lighter consequences).
I'm saying that based on my own assumption only. What I said is not validated. Don't quote me if it turns out otherwise :siam:

This is an excerpt taken out of MOM's website concerning your query:
Employers who discover that their FDWs are under-aged should report the matter to MOM immediately.
