My understanding is that 3H2s is the norm in many JCs, and that you have to have good O level results to apply to take 4H2s. My friend who had a daughter in a top JC was surprised to find this out when her second daughter went to a JC different from her elder daughter.

As zeemimi mentioned, 4H2s is a norm in the top JCs. But there are some students taking 3H2s in these JCs, mostly because they didn't meet the criteria to take 4H2s. I assume there are students who will drop to 3H2s in Year 6 because it makes better sense for them to focus on 3 rather than 4 H2s, especially as UAS considers only 3 H2s and 3H1s for calculation. All the students in my dd's class are sticking to 4H2s. Did many drop to 3H2s in your daughter's class, zeemimi?

I don't think there are many. DD's class is quite a diverse mix. From GEP, Olympians, 2 pointers to DSA & repeat students. Many playful ones. Last minute muggers. Seems like lastest prelims prove that most of them are a bright lot if they study more and play less.

What a diverse bunch. Probably because of their subject combi? They're all probably really bright and know when it's time to study. šŸ™‚

Further Mathematics is back for the A Levels, and will only be offered as a H2 subject.

Looking at NJC's combi example for F. Maths, it looks like students taking this subject will be similar to the old A level double maths, physics, econs combi. (Although students have a choice to substitute chemistry for physics). 4 H2s.

Just being curious - why is MOE bringing back F Maths? Is there any benefit for the students? What courses in the Uni will need such combi?

                      Extract from moe:
H2 Further Mathematics is designed for students who are mathematically-inclined and who intend to specialise in mathematics, sciences or engineering or disciplines with higher demand on mathematical skills. It extends and expands on the range of mathematics and statistics topics in H2 Mathematics and provides these students with a head start in learning a wider range of mathematical methods and tools that are useful for solving more complex problems in mathematics and statistics
from education minister:
I am pleased to announce that MOE will be introducing Further Mathematics as a H2 level subject in the A-level curriculum from next year. Students in JC1 in 2016 will be able to take up this subject. This will create more opportunities for our young to develop stronger interest and foundation in STEM. Further Mathematics will expose students to advanced mathematical concepts in areas like linear algebra, numerical methods and statistics, with a focus on knowledge construction and applications. Students will appreciate how the application of mathematics lies at the heart of modern innovations (e.g., internet search engines, machine learning and intelligent system, and financial modelling). I hope that students with the passion for mathematics will seize this opportunity to take the subject and achieve greater mastery in the pursuit of STEM.
                      http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/speeches/2015/07/24/speech-by-mr-heng-swee-keat-at-the-closing-ceremony-of-the-national-engineers-day-2015.php
current h2 math is easier than the previous further math. And we need further math to bridge the gap for students going engineering, maths, or science. For instance, in engineering, students need to be strong in calculus. Knowing how to do solve 2nd order differential equation, finding arc length, integration using reduction formula, etc used to be covered in further math but not covered in h2 math. Without further math background, students will find it harder to grasp advanced engineering maths. With further math, picking up engineering math and getting a good honors degree in engineering will be easier.

Is computer science also a new introduction to the A levels? Appears that we are heading back towards the A level offering of the past when Further Math and Computer Science were options.
