      slmkhoo:
My Sec 3 daughter will be taking the HSK level 5 later this year. Any advice as to preparation? Any tips? How are the oral and writing components like? Thanks!

Simkhoo, are there different types of tests? Do you know what is this Level 5 equivalent to? My boy is in P5 this year and he took the Level 5 test last year. Not that my boy's Chinese was fantastic but rather that was the option given by the school for all P4 students last year. So, wondering whether is the Level 5 test you were referring to the same as the Level 5 test that my son took last year. :scratchhead:

Apparently, according the notification sent out by the school, level 5 maps to Singapore P5 to Sec3 NCL! And Level 6 maps to Sec 3 HCL and above. So your son would have been at the lower end of the scale, and if he did well, his Chinese must be pretty good! My daughter doesn't know all that much Chinese, so I'm just wondering how she should prepare.

It's the Chinese equivalent of TOEFL - a test of Chinese for foreigners. You can google on it and find out more.

              http://www.sherv.net/ for the information!

Errr....my son didn't do so well. I find the questions tough, too, because we do not speak Mandarin at the level that the Mainland Chinese do. So, they test terms that we seldom use. For a start, there are sample papers on the website. You may like to let your daughter try out the papers first.

Maybe try some tongue twisters, such as \"黑化肥会挥发。吃葡萄不吐葡萄皮,不吃葡萄倒吐葡萄皮\".

slmkhoo, how did the test go for your dd2? Care to share tips of how she prepare for the test back then?

My dd's school is encouraging the students to sit for the test. Dd has the option to take either level 5 or 6. We are unsure if she should sit for the test at all. Any idea if there are real advantage in taking the test? Dd thinks Level 6 is beyond her ability. Any disadvantage to opt for Level 5 instead?

                    Thanks in advance

My DD2 took the HSK level 5 test, two weeks ago.

Prior to that, we didn't know much about HSK. So we didn't do much prep except going through with her some of the 100 questions sample paper which she brought back from school. Still waiting for her results. 😄

Her Chinese teacher told her if the results are good, it can be used to apply for scholarship later on. It is the one and only standardized Chinese proficiency test recognised by China.

Good to have when applying for Peking Uni (level 6) or Tsinghua (level 5) but I am not sure if applicable to Singaporeans students since we are already proficient in Chinese!
