      Hi Sec 1 parents!

Time flies, we are coming to the end of the year and our girls are going Sec 2 next year!

EOY was over a week ago, what do your girls think about the papers? Accordingly to my dd, she said most of them find that most papers were quite difficult. What do your girls say? Is it quite a nrom that NYGH set difficult papers?

      Hi Song22 :imanisland:

Yes, can't believe it's coming to end of the year already! Dd was just saying something about the personalised curriculum and boarding school programme for the Sec 2 yesterday. 😉

As for the EOY, I heard from dd there were girls who failed certain papers in her class. She said a handful of her classmates had been called up yesterday and told that the science teacher will be conducting extra lessons for them. Not sure if it will apply to other subjects or not.
Markings are much stricter now as compared to pri schools and this is something we have learnt to accept since starting Sec 1.
Eg Highest score for this LA compo is 24/30 (80%) for the cohort if she remembers correctly whereas highest in compo for her pri school is usually close to full marks, sth like 39/40.

While we have gotten all dd's marks, I am still waiting for the SDMS to be updated as it will be difficult to interpret it without knowing the level of difficulty of the papers.
The SDMS will give the percentile of your dd's results for each subject, so we know where she stands in the cohort for each of the subject and work on her weaker ones.

      Hello Lego :imanisland:

Thanks for sharing, I am always very confused about the intranet that they have  so there is a mc online and there is this SDMS, what else do they have?

🤷 I only know these 2 portals leh.

Basically the SDMS is like a detailed report book for our dd. It gives you the breakdown of all the graded assignments and test/exams, the teachers' assessment of our child's attitudes, skills and abilities and any other comments for each of the subject. There's also the percentile of your child's results in the cohort for each subject, the lowest, highest, mean, median, overall percentage and MSG for the whole cohort for each term, so that you can draw more meaningful conclusions from it.

For sports CCA, do they only take in girls with some background of the sports in primary school? For example, softball team only take in members who are already softball players in primary schools.

Is Nanyang Girls ultra- competitive? My girl is considering between Nanyang and Cedar, both offered her under DSA. For Nanyang, she got it through the academic route while Cedar’s offer is for a CCA sport.

            Hi,
My DD was also offered NYGH and Cedar under academic. She chose NYGH because of the uniform :rotflmao: and the red colour seats at the auditorium. I know it sounds ridiculous but to a 12 years old, their criteria of selecting a school is as simple as that. She is currently in upper sec. I am sharing the following based on what I observed my DD's experience in NYGH, other parents might have different views or inputs. There are girls who are ultra-competitive as NYGH is one of the top girls’ school and naturally everyone is academically driven and mugging is like a daily bread. However, there are girls who slack and the school do put these girls who don’t meet the minimum promotion criteria to be transferred to the O-level track or retain.
NYGH has a good programme to nurture, train and teach the girls to be an all rounder academically and in life skills. In the last 3 years, DD was exposed to many out of school learning such as hostel living, 6 days kayak at the sea in Johor, overseas trips, drama theatrical works, music, wu-shu, many talks/seminars conducted for motivation and management skills. Teachers are helpful and caring and consultation to clarify your doubts are always available if the students take the initiatives. NYGH teaches the girls to be responsible for their own revision/self studies and results. The curriculum is wide and it is the students responsibility to be an independent learner to learn the depth and take initiatives to do practice papers.
In Sec 1, DD was loaded with English, Math, Science and Chinese tuitions (until middle of Sec 2). Looking back, the tuitions might not be necessary because NYGH teachers are available for consultations and there are many resources such as past year’s papers which teachers can provide and mark if you do the extra and submit. Now, she only takes Chinese and Math tuitions.
The other precautionary note is that for DSA students, if she doesn’t clear the minimum promotion requirement, the child has to retain or go to international school. She can’t transfer to another school with O-level track even though the other school can take her in. Parents were told late last year that Sec 2 who doesn’t clear the promotion criteria to Sec 3 would have to be transferred to O-level track in Sec 3 or retain in Sec 2. This applies for Sec 3 promotion criteria too.
DD’s favourite is iPad learning in Sec 2 and 3. The teaching materials are uploaded and can be retrieved and learn on the go.
As for CCA, the child has to go for trials and you can try as many sports, dance etc as you want. The seniors and the school will do the selection. My DD enjoyed her Sec 1 tremendously as first of half year was mostly orientation activities and parents are also warmly welcomed to the NY parent volunteer/support group which is a huge group of parents. You might want to search Facebook and see the activities the parents volunteer organized.
I can’t comment about Cedar but when DD was offered CO, she felt very welcomed as there was a formal ceremony to hand her the letter of offer and there was a tea reception hosted by the Principal, a few teachers and DD’s primary school pupils who entered Cedar “buddied” her. Apart from curriculum, I suppose if you want a multi-racial learning environment then it would be Cedar as NYGH has mainly Chinese students. Having said that NYGH girls are cool :imcool: and they speaks English in school most of the time and they are not “Cheeena” or nerds as perceived by other schools…and lastly, the sleeveless uniform and red colour auditorium chairs must have been so attractive to pull her to NYGH instead of the blue and grey colour uniform with tie. All the best to your DD.

              Hi Lilo

Thank u so much for the very helpful feedback.

I definitely want my DD to be happy wherever she goes. For some reasons, Nanyang girls are perceived to be academic focused and no fun by some primary sch kids. Thanks for sharing your DD's experience in lower sec. Sounds like they do a lot more than just study. One factor for us to consider is also the distance from home. If accept Cedar IP, must go VJC for yr 5&6. VJC is very far from where we live. At least 60-80mins per trip by public transport. Hwa Chong is much nearer.

It's a pity that NYGH lacks the diversity that Cedar has in terms of the variety of races and backgrounds of the students. Are the students in Nanyang mainly kids of rich parents?

For my girl, she feels that there are more friends from her pri sch going to Cedar than to Nanyang. To a 12 yr old, that matters, although I feel that she can make new friends easily in NYGH. 😄

                Hi Table Spoon,

I do not think NYGH lacks the diversity. My DD is going to Sec 3 next year and she has been quite happy that the school has, from time to time, organized events with participation from other schools like Raffle's Girls, RI, Hwachong, ACJC.

In term of race and culture, my DD informed me that she has friends who are Malaysian, Japanese, Korean, American and Canadian in the school. And we are Vietnamese Singaporean (probably my DD is the only full-fledged Vietnamese student (not exchange student) in NYGH so far 🙂 .

So please do not worry about the diversity at NYGH. And yes, most of my DD's friends are from wealthy families in Singapore but they are quite nice and well behaved.

                  Hi,

My DD is Sec 1 this year and next year she will have to purchase an iPad for school. I bought her a 16 GB iPad late last year, not knowing that she needed to use one in school. Now I realise that 16 GB is way too little for school use but I don't want to waste money buying a new iPad. Any suggestions for ways to get more storage space? Thank you so much. I'm at my wits end here 😞

To my knowledge, the apps or projects that take up most space is for videos (iMovies?), follow by Photos and maybe music files.

My girl’s iMovie files size is about 9Gb (about 4-5 projects).

One way is to keep check on the file size of the iMovie projects and move it out after submission.

For students who take up the MOE 3rd language, do they attend lessons in NYGH or externally?

Will the 3rd language clash with sch cca?

Based on my DD's experience, 3rd Lang is held at Newton MOE LC (except for German which is at Bishan). Malay is done in-house. Lessons were on either Mon or Wed. Generally, no clash with CCA, unless special/adhoc programmes. When that happens, students can arrange for make up lessons. NYGH provides one way transport from school to Language Centres (for a small fee, I think, $50 for a year?).
