All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

Hi, can anyone help provide some advice.... My boys 6 and 4 are with Yamaha now doing the electone for about 1-2 years. I'm thinking of progressing and learning music with them since I feel that I can provide supervision and encouragement simultaneously but yamaha is disallowing parental accompaniment soon.


Should I sign up for additional home piano lessons or looked for another music school that allows me to sit in and learn with them?

If you want to learn yourself best to get a teacher yourself, preferably one who is comfortable and experienced in teaching adults. You can perhaps somewhat learn an instrument by observing others' lessons and you might be able to play some pieces quite decently this way, but if you wish to play a high level you will need someone to supervise and give feedbacks to you.

My kids are with Kels Music in Bukit Timah doing piano and violin and some guitar and drums.

They have been around for a long time and is one of the better ones.
Good with individual and small groups like pair.

So far they are enjoying it and learning well.
Was recommended to us by friends.
They are experienced, have good results and is one of the most well-known there.
Teachers are friendly too.

Hi, read thru bunnybluey post above & i have the similar situation like her. My gal of 6 would like to pick up piano & i am hoping to find a music school around marine parade or katong area for her to attend group lesson & cultivate her interest. Me too, hopefully she can progress well & not drop halfway like me. May i know any mummies/daddies can recommend a good school to start with? Much appreciated!

I had a chat with a boss of a private music school registered with MOE. He shared with me that when he gets teachers to come in for the interviews, they have good paper qualification but yet unable to show him some of the techniques required. He shared that a piano teacher who has distinctions for her exam may not necessarily be a good teacher because that person has been drilled to master the exam pieces till to perfection and neglect the other areas that to him are necessary to be a good piano teacher. It was an eye-opener.


I learnt that an older child who has not learnt how to play the piano before will catch up much faster than another child who started at much earlier age. An older child has the mental capability to remember more things and acceleration of piano learning can be possible if that student is already very smart. From his experience, students that have the capabilities to go top secondary schools or excel academically tend to do very well in learning piano and they master the techniques faster due to how their brains are programmed.

Daily practicing of piano for beginners have to be at least 30 mins. If the child practises daily for longer duration, results can be seen faster. A good teacher can teach all pupils but not all pupils have the same learning ability. Some grasp the techniques faster, some learn at their own pace.
