Would recommend everyone to follow the school’s Facebook page. You’ll receive useful information and updates on the boys’ activities. Here are the latest posts:

      Dear Sec/Year 1 Students,
Once again, a warm welcome to the Victorian family.
As shared during Sec 1 registration, report to the School Hall on Monday, 4 January 2016, 7.15am. The attire is PE T shirt and shorts. We will arrange you by class before flag raising starts at 7.30am.
The class list will be available in the school foyer on Monday morning. Our Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) will be there to guide you.
We look forward to welcoming you to the VS family on Monday, 4 Jan 2016.
      Nil Sine Labore.

      Dear 2016 Sec/Year 2-4 Victorians,
The new school year will start on Monday, 4 January 2016.
Please report for morning assembly in the School Hall by 7.25am.
As it is Monday, the attire is full school uniform with school tie. Please make sure you are well-groomed and your hair is short. There will be grooming checks in the first two weeks of school.
The orientation programme has been sent earlier to your LMS account.
Enjoy the last part of the holidays and the New Year celebrations. We wish all Victorians and their families a wonderful 2016.
      Nil Sine Labore.

Noted the differentiation between Sec 1 "students" and Sec 2-4 "Victorians". This is probably because there will be a badge-pinning ceremony that will officially induct the new students into the school.

          Lionhesrted:

You may want to think again about applying for RSP/MSP. Most boys drop MSP, CSP and Third Languages by end of Sec 2, especially if your Son was not offered by MOE. Many drop even in Sec 1. The boys find it difficult to cope with another language and the heavy workload in Secondary School. Without regular and daily use and practice, difficult to acquire a new language and sustain interest in learning.
In addition, the BI exam result is included in the computation of the overall GPA as long as the pupil takes the subject each year. Not sure about MSP. My nephew felt that it was unfair as his overall grade was always pulled down by this new language. But he persisted till end of sec 2. However, if the pupil continue with it till O levels, he may use it to replace a humanities subject in his L1R5.
My ds did not take RSP/MSP so I am not sure if I am correct. Lionhesrted, can verify please?

Thank you all for your useful advice. My son had the offer letter for MSP but the admin staff told me that I could ask the form teacher on how to register when school reopen. Guess he will be too late then.

Actually it might be a blessing in disguise. I actually didnt encourage him to take up 3rd language but my son wanted Malay as he learned some basic during his primary days. I agreed to let him take as VS offered MSP in house. I dont want him to overstretch himself on travelling to and fro too much as we are staying far from VS.

Think I will just ask him to give MSP a miss.

Anyone is in VS concert band? Any dates to take note of if there are any selection test? My son is in percussion and he would like to continue his interest in VS band.

If he is interested in MSP, ask him to speak to HOD/MTL.

There will be CCA trials for sports and performing arts CCAs. if I am not wrong, the Principal’s letter in the Sec 1 folder that your proxy should have received will contain the dates. HOD/PE & CCA also shared on trials at Sec 1 registration.

For new Sec/Year 1, the Orientation Programme and the info you need is in the folder given on registration day. Information on CCA, trials, forms, booklist etc are all in the folder. The contents page to the folder will usually list the forms you have to submit. Go through the folder and you will find the key info there. If you were not at the Sec 1 registration, and your proxy did not pass you the folder, get it from the general office on first day of school.

As you have not officially provided the school with your email and contacts, the school will not be able to email to you. Once your son’s Learning Management System (LMS account) is set up, you will get the emails.

PSG also organises the Coffee Talk to orientate parents to the school. Information was also shared at Sec 1 registration day and in the folder.

Hope the above is useful information for new Sec/Year 1 parents!

                      Anyone can advise please:

For HCL, if a pupil scored an A2 or a B3 for his S3 O level CL, can he continue to do HCL in S4?

                      TIA.

Can continue to do HCL. After the release of results, the Teachers will speak to the boys. They will advise them. Final decision is with the parents and students.

I know of 1 case of student who did badly (C5 at Sec 3 O level), persisted to do HCL at Sec 4 and got E8 at the O level for HCL. Hence, the CL grade of C5 cannot be used for L1R5 at JAE (as it is not good), the child did not get 2 point bonus as did not pass both EL and HCL, and still have to do CL at JC (minimum is to get a D7 for HCL so that the child did not need to do MTL at JC).

For JAE, CL grade can be counted as part of L1R5. Hence, if Sec 3 O Level CL is A1/A2, can be counted as R4 or R5 (assuming other grades not as good). Hence, if CL grade is too bad (unlikely to pass HCL at Sec 4 O level, you may want to drop to CL and resit in June MTL O level exam.

                        For L1R5,
                        L1 is EL or HMTL
                        R1 is Humanities subject
                        R2 is Maths/Science
                        R3 is Maths/Science/Humanities
R4 is best of remaining subject
R5 is best of remaining subject

For info, students will get 2 points bonus if they choose VJC as first choice (affiliation).
For those who do well in CCA (distinction), they get 2 points bonus.
Students who pass both EL and HMTL get two points bonus.
However, maximum bonus is 4 points.

Hence, if a student not likely to pass HMTL, may be better to do standard MTL, resit in June and get a better grade (A1/A2) so that it can be used for L1R5.

Refer to page 12 and 24 of JAE booklet on bonus points and L1R5 computation
