      janet88:
science text books have been thin all these years. it is more like a colour picture book for kindergarten kids.

my daughter has 5 periods of science.
      12 periods of english.
      10 periods of math.

if schools do not provide additional notes, there is no way kids can pass science using that picture book.
Just get the PSLE revision guide...whatever is needed is all there.

when daughter lost that energy text book, i was so reluctant to get a replacement knowing that it is hardly of use...but the teacher seems adamant that she has it

why not do away with the picture books and make psle revision guide compulsory in the booklist? this title will provide comprehensive info from p3 all the way to p6.

:hi5: I have the same queries 4 years ago when my DD1 was in P4 and I :scratchhead: why there are so few Science periods. I sent an email to her Science teacher, who is the HOD and her reply to me was,\"

I understand your concern regarding MPAL Science textbooks. These textbooks are approved books by MOE, basically the textbooks cover the essential concepts pupils are expected to know for each theme and topic. The intention of having less written text in the textbooks is to allow pupils to learn Science in an inquiry way, thus in class, teachers do focus a lot on hands-on activities such as experiments conducted using the workbook.

Perhaps I can just update you what I have done with the class lately, we have been doing several experiments on the topic - matter, from these experiments, the pupils have explored on their own to find out the out the properties of matter (Solid, Liquid & Gas). Knowing the concepts are important so that pupils are ready to apply the concepts to questions asked. The workbooks are with me and after the activities are completed, the workbooks will be returned to the pupils for revision. After the pupils have learnt the topic on matter, I will be exposing them to process skills questions related to the topic (this is to prepare them for examination). In addition, I have made the pupils to do Science journal writing weekly so that I am able to find out how much the pupils have learnt in class. S has started her journal writing.

For parents, I would like to suggest to you one guide book which you can purchase for S, she can use this book up to Primary 6 - I have recommended an orange PSLE guide book by Marshall Canvendish to most of my P6 pupils (can be purchased from popular bookshop). This guide book covers all the themes and topics that pupils need to know for Science. Having a good guide book is sufficient, sometimes purchasing too many guide books may confused the child. As for assessment paper, S has already purchased (in the book list) the past year papers, so I will be using those paper to guide them on how to tackle examination questions. I will also be printing more if need be. \"

Fast forward, now my DD2 is in P5 and I am very glad to say that she has a very dedicated Science teacher who is also using the same technique as what DD1 Science T did.

I guess the textbooks have more illustrations...it's a picture book after all 😆

First, you need to understand what is in the textbooks....if not, then any notes or guides will make little sense.

On textbooks, no point having thick textbooks. Just look at the Maths textbooks and activity books. Any teachers focus on the Maths textbooks? The standard of the Maths activity books is not high so some schools are bumping them for their top classes.

For Science textbooks, my son’s school teacher is not recommending any guide book. The thickness of the Science textbooks + Science activity books + all the school notes and worksheets is no where near the thickness of those Science guidebooks sold in Popular. Those guidebooks tend to over teach. Note that our P5 kids are doing the new Science syllabus.

                alng:

Am analysing my son's time table.

There is a total of 55 periods (of 30 mins each) per week from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm. I will discount the first period as I doubt the teachers can commence lesson at 7.30 am sharp when the morning assembly starts at 7.25 am.

The distribution of 55 periods is as follows:
                English - 12 periods
                Chinese - 12 periods
                Maths - 10 periods
                Science - 6 periods
                PE - 3 periods
                Mass exercise - 2 periods
Civil and Moral Education - 3 periods
                Social Studies - 2 periods
                NANO - 2 periods
                Music - 1 period
                Art - 2 periods
                Total - 55 periods

Are MOE and the school sending a message that Science is not important since it has half of the time as compared to EL and CL?

Science text books are also much thinner than the rest!! 😆

Anyway, I guess it requires much lesser time consuming practice than the other subjects.

Though Science does not require as much practice as Math, the teachers still need time to explain the concepts, to show videos, to do Science experiments and to teach the kids answering skills.

Maths, on the other hand, requires more practice but the practice can be done as homework and the valuable class time can be used for teaching concepts and doing corrections.

                  very true.
for math, once teachers made sure the class knows how to get the questions done, the rest can be taken home to complete.
with science, teachers would need to do experiments for some topics and require more time to teach concepts to ensure the class really understands. actually there should be MORE periods allocated to Science...whether the batch is doing the new or old syllabus.
