      Nebbermind:

Am analysing my son's time table.

There is a total of 55 periods (of 30 mins each) per week from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm. I will discount the first period as I doubt the teachers can commence lesson at 7.30 am sharp when the morning assembly starts at 7.25 am.

The distribution of 55 periods is as follows:
      English - 12 periods
      Chinese - 12 periods
      Maths - 10 periods
      Science - 6 periods
      PE - 3 periods
      Mass exercise - 2 periods
Civil and Moral Education - 3 periods
      Social Studies - 2 periods
      NANO - 2 periods
      Music - 1 period
      Art - 2 periods
      Total - 55 periods

Are MOE and the school sending a message that Science is not important since it has half of the time as compared to EL and CL?

Science text books are also much thinner than the rest!! 😆

Anyway, I guess it requires much lesser time consuming practice than the other subjects.

Though Science does not require as much practice as Math, the teachers still need time to explain the concepts, to show videos, to do Science experiments and to teach the kids answering skills.

Maths, on the other hand, requires more practice but the practice can be done as homework and the valuable class time can be used for teaching concepts and doing corrections.

        very true.
for math, once teachers made sure the class knows how to get the questions done, the rest can be taken home to complete.
with science, teachers would need to do experiments for some topics and require more time to teach concepts to ensure the class really understands. actually there should be MORE periods allocated to Science...whether the batch is doing the new or old syllabus.

My son’s school hasn’t started yet. They said will start for SA2 this year. SA1 is still using the old format.

I asked the tuition teacher about it and was shocked she didn’t even know about the new oral format!

Just came back from Teachers-Parents meeting.

His Chinese teacher said that they just taught the kids this new format, hence for SA1 oral, it will still be old format. New format to be tested in SA2.
Do they have time to learn? My Dc said the school doesn’t teach oral that much for the past few years.
                    Is the new format difficult?

On the new Chinese oral format, my son’s school gave them a lecture 2 days ago and showed them a sample video. Other than that, there is no practice of such oral format.

O levels Chinese oral is also introducing videos from this year and my elder girl is in Sec 4. She already has the video format of oral last year.

                        I see the following challenges:

                        1. In the past, PSLE students memorised the model oral picture conversation. During my girl’s PSLE time 4 years ago, we had 30 such pictures (past PSLE oral pictures) and written answers from the school teachers. Now, the students cannot do such memorisation for videos.

                        2. The video is to be viewed during the 5-10 mins preparation time. During the preparation time, the student has to read the reading passage too. Time management is important.

                        3. I understand that the video will not be shown again when the student goes to the examiner’s table. This means that the students have to remember the content of the video. This is not easy under exam condition.

                        4. The students need to think on their feet and respond to the oral examiners. This is not easy for students too.

Schools do not have the time to prepare the students for oral as 1-1 preparation is very time consuming.

                        I have no solutions. Sigh!
