im not even eligible for JC/MI with this result. i dont think i will do well in engineering as im a feminine girl and engineering is more of like a masculine course. i look thru it &its not suitable for me at all. IT sounds cool but its too complicated esp programming. wanna try design but i struggled w DnT last yr.I wanna do well & study business or psychology
I'll just go straight to the point.
Based on your results and possible subject combinations, MI or JC would not be suitable for you. You will probably do well in an Engineering or IT type of courses in the poly. -
jetsetter:
Can I go back to my former school to study as a school candidate? No, since it is for students who did badly and only eligible for ite. Can i retake as a private candidate? Yes. i went to MOE and asked they say i can use a comb cert. I wanna try this yr & see if my results improve or not. if it didnt, then i will accept my fate. Meanwhile I'll sign up for a course in Poly.
Agree with floppy. Even if you get into MI or another lower-tiered JC, you might not be able to get into Science faculty. If you get Arts Faculty and your Eng is poor, you will have a tough time doing those Humanities subjects. Don't forget the mother of all Humans to deal with - GP.
How about business mgmt or accountancy in poly?
You probably can retake as pte candidate, but like Joy for Learning 111 has advised, you need to a min of some grade to qualify, right?
Part of the reasons why i wanna get into JC/MI is cuz most of my cousins who took their A levels said that it's not that hard. One of my cousins who got C6 for Eng but got into a top JC cuz of higher chinese said that A lvl isnt really that hard as long as you study. Most of my cousins studied in JC or is aiming for JC. i want to be on par with them. not look down by them since im from poly. Then there comes my career choices. im an indecisive person so i might regret taking the course in poly. what if i regret and have no choice but to die die study the same course in uni or to work as the same career in the future? Regretting & switching course in uni is much easier with an A lvl cert maybe? High chance of getting into a good prestigious local uni too if you're a jc graduate w a decent A level score.
Even if i still can't into a jc my cert will look horrible with 2 Ds on it. I know its a hard life if i were in jc/mi but i believe that anyone can make it no matter how hard it is, its just the determination. i know i might not have an advantage into science stream as i took comb science but i hope they would maybe consider since I took A maths? I think i can get in if i retake my double maths & get a distinct. this time. That's just my opinion on Poly/JC tho I havent try any of it yet.
Im not that much interested in Accountance but i wanna try business. I cant get in both which is sad
thats why i hope to retake & pass english so i can get more to choose. even if im content with my current course getting better grade for English is neccessary for future enrolment & job opportunities. dont think employer wud be happy with my current english results. Thus, I am very determined to retake as a private candidate since I'm qualify for it according to the MOE. I believe I can do better since I knew that my previous way of studying is wrong, and I realized what mistakes I've committed so I could mend it this time. As of the arts stream, if say my English & humans result improve, why not? \"A pathway is created by someone walking on the ground (or grass) where nobody has stepped before\"

My post may be meaningless since application had already closed but given that you have qualified for several courses in the polytechnics, I hope you have taken other options while you prepare to retake the exam as a private candidate.

I'm surprise to hear that the A level is not that difficult. It's probably true if the objective is to obtain a pass. However, to be able to control the choice of courses in the University, that would need more than a pass. Comparison with your cousins appears to me that you see the A level as the end journey in itself. Unfortunately, it is not. The A level is only an intermediary stop and a roadblock for people seeking entry into a university. Thus, the A level is no different from a diploma if it is used as the means to qualify for the university. Different tools, same destination.
Switching course (from the one a diploma holder took in Poly) or entering a course in university has nothing to do with the type of entry qualification (A level, IB or diploma). It is all about the quality of that entry qualification. Score a good pass, a diploma holder is just as able to switch / enter into a course of his / her choice as the A level student. The A level, by itself, has no advantage if it is merely 'decent'.
Despite your strength in Maths, jetsetter has pointed out why the subject combinations in MI/JC will not work to your advantage given your weaknesses in English / Humanities. I am of the opinion that your previous way of studying isn't wrong; if anything, your results (A2s and B3s) indicate that the method is fine but the foundation of the English language is not. It's better to exploit your strengths than to expose your weaknesses. The A level, especially the General Paper, can be a harsh mistress. -

You're full of tenacity, which is very good. I'm not sure if you can \"mix & match\" or \"pick & choose\" the best grades from either certs attained in 2015 and 2016 as you wish to apply for JC the following year?

Yes, she can. MOE will accept combined results taken at up to 2 sittings only (no need to be consecutive years).

While it's easy to improve on 1 or 2 subjects as a private candidate, especially moving on from D7/E8 to C6/C5, it is difficult to be able to improve in more than 2 subjects, unless the candidate is immersed in a structured school environment. To be able to improve on 4 subjects, let alone scoring distinctions in 2 subjects, is extremely rare. -

Social Studies. Long live great leader!!! Haha.OT - I just do not understand what is MOE's rationale to force MS students to take combined humanities as one of the compulsory subjects for O levels.
Does anyone know?
It's a real struggle for the majority of students including my son.
Well that's one part of it. But it probably has more to do with diversifying the student. Same reason why humanities stream students in Sec school still have to take math.
I don't think comb humans really is a struggle tho. Social studies is really easy. Just have to be careful with the other subject. Geog is usually easier than history for science students. It's at least much less of a struggle than A math, pure chem, pure physics. -

Engineering is not a \"masculine\" course. Not interested just say not interested. -
MOE is looking to provide all rounded knowledge at secondary school level before they move on to more specialised courses in poly or A levels.
In my opinion this is important as students need to have some kind of general knowledge to know what is this world / society about. No point having having 100 marks for math but not know some basic knowledge of the society, etc. -
hi. i just took my olvls and havent got my results but was considering going to MI next year. these are a few of my concerns, hope to get some help
1) im a 5n student, will it be too late to study for another 3 years? (i would then be taking alvls at 20 year old)
2) i didnt took pure sciences and want to pursue sci stream. is MI slower to cope for people not having pure sci foundation?
3)i live in the east and went to check it out and the travelling time is about 1.5hr. isit worth it to travel so far? and what time do sch normally start?
4)is cca compulsory in MI? i know that cca is not compulosry in JCs but what abt MI? i want to focus on studies than getting a Cca.
if u need more information, my prelim result was Eng-E8, math-A1,comb sci(phy,chem)-A1, Amath-A2, comb human-E8, olvl june chi-B3.
i know looking at my english i might not get in at the end if i fail my eng. but was considering the conditional admission if im eligible for it.
btw my reason for wanting to pursue education in MI is that i rather study math and sciences than go into poly and i dont know what to take in poly too(like most courses dont interst me).
i dont want to go a normal jc as im afraid that i cant cope as my eng is quite bad(even if i do pass my eng its max a C5)
this is what i feel i will get after siting for the papers
Eng-c6
math-A1
sci-A2/A1
Amath-B3/A2
comb humanities-B4/C5
june chi-B3
so my R4 would be abt 13-15
hope to get some help to make my decisions before my olvl result come out in jan. :thankyou: -
My daughter is just finishing her 3rd year at MI, so I'll tell you what I know.
tingggggggggg:
Hope this helps.hi. i just took my olvls and havent got my results but was considering going to MI next year. these are a few of my concerns, hope to get some help
1) im a 5n student, will it be too late to study for another 3 years? (i would then be taking alvls at 20 year old)
If the extra time helps you do better, then it's worth it. No point hurrying and not doing as well as you could. Some people do better at a slower pace.
2) i didnt took pure sciences and want to pursue sci stream. is MI slower to cope for people not having pure sci foundation?
It should be slower because the curriculum is spread over 3 yrs instead of 2. But you will need to find out whether they will allow you to take H2 sciences. I believe those intending to take H2 sciences and Maths might have to take a test at the start of term to qualify.
3)i live in the east and went to check it out and the travelling time is about 1.5hr. isit worth it to travel so far? and what time do sch normally start?
School starts at 7.55am. They know that some students stay far away (my daughter has classmates who live in Pasir Ris), and as it's the only 3-yr A level school in Singapore, they know that students don't have another option. If you think the 3-yr system suits you best, then it's worth it.
4)is cca compulsory in MI? i know that cca is not compulosry in JCs but what abt MI? i want to focus on studies than getting a Cca.
It's compulsory to do at least 1 CCA. Some require more time than others, so you should find out more before joining.
if u need more information, my prelim result was Eng-E8, math-A1,comb sci(phy,chem)-A1, Amath-A2, comb human-E8, olvl june chi-B3.
i know looking at my english i might not get in at the end if i fail my eng. but was considering the conditional admission if im eligible for it.
I can't answer this question - why don't you call the school to ask, or visit their open house? I don't know when it will be, but probably some time in Jan before the O level results are released. You can call them and ask.
btw my reason for wanting to pursue education in MI is that i rather study math and sciences than go into poly and i dont know what to take in poly too(like most courses dont interst me).
i dont want to go a normal jc as im afraid that i cant cope as my eng is quite bad(even if i do pass my eng its max a C5)
You will still have to take GP in MI as it's part of the A level requirements. If you don't think you can do it, then you should look again at alternative routes. What are your plans after A levels? If you don't pass GP, you probably can't get into university. Also note that only about 30% of MI students make it to local universities, so unless you have the means to go overseas, it's not a given that you will gain entry to university even if you pass GP.
If you don't do well enough to get into university, you may decide to go to poly after that, which will prolong your education even longer. That's OK if you don't mind, but it seems you would prefer to finish more quickly. Many poly courses are science and math heavy, so there should be something that appeals to you, even if it's not exactly what you want. Maybe you can look closer at the engineering and IT courses.
this is what i feel i will get after siting for the papers
Eng-c6
math-A1
sci-A2/A1
Amath-B3/A2
comb humanities-B4/C5
june chi-B3
so my R4 would be abt 13-15
hope to get some help to make my decisions before my olvl result come out in jan. :thankyou:
