I would like to share my bad experience with ICR Parkway. My daughter started the program when she was 3.5 years at ICR Sengkang, she enjoyed it very much. Subsequently we transferred her to Marine Parade as we moved house.


The Centre is poorly managed by 2 unprofessional staff. Firstly, they assigned us to the wrong class, then when the teacher was MC, they failed to inform us, claiming that they couldn’t reach us on the phone when we had no missed calls at all. The branch also kept changing teachers which had no stability. My daughter disliked the school so much that she cried every week, we had no choice but to pull her out after 2 months. It was wasted that she had dropped out of the programme, but the experience with ICR Marine Parade was terrifying. I would not recommend any parent to send their kids there.

My K2 boy has just completed ICR Vol 1-5 (6 mths course). Teacher commented that his reading is good, and recommends him to skip Vol 6 (ICR Advance - 6 mths) and move on to Comprehension & Creative Writing (CCW).

He attended CCW once and brought back the materials. It was all long classic passages (eg. Wizard of Oz)! Looks challenging for him who is just starting to read, but yet to fully comprehend especially longer sentence structures and vocabs etc.

Also, he will miss out grammar part (eg. singular/plural, nouns, pronouns) which is taught in Vol 6. Hence, i requested him to not to skip, despite teacher's concern that he might feel bored when the reading materials in ICR Advance are too easy for him.

My boy will be P1 next year. By the time he completes ICR Advance, it will be Mar 2016. Should I continue with the CCW, or switch him to another enrichment system? Not sure if ICR is most suitable for local p1 syllabus. BTW, so far I don't see many big kids at ICR centre. Is it because Primary school children go somewhere else for English enrichment?

There are big kids at ICR Centre though not many. My boy who is P6 this year is still ICR. I just sent my youngest boy who is 5 this year to ICR. I agreed with you not to skip Vol 6 if cost is not an issue. Cheers

My boy (P1 this year) is with ICR City Square doing ICR advanced. He will complete the course by Mar 2016. If we did not withdraw him, he will progress to Primary English Program. I am thinking if I should let him continue or withdraw. If withdraw i have to find another English class for him. The ICR teacher is very good. He likes her alot and enjoy the class. Any comments on PEP?

I wish to draw attention to all parents that I Can Read has recently removed the mandatory temperature taking and hand sanitizing gel requirement before classes. The response was due to some kids’ sensitivity towards the sanitizing gel. What the school has failed to address is how then would the school be able tk ascertain the health of the students to prevent sick kids’ attendance in order to discourage the spread of virus and germs. We are still appealing to the school to reconsider this and hope that all parents with kids in this school can appeal together to the respective schools too. It is certainly more effective to be proactive than reactive with regards to the health matters of the kids.

My personal view is that without exposure, there'll never be learning. Do we expect our kids to automatically know what's a wedding? I'm sure along the way, there's some explanation we have to do, isn't it?


I think the beauty of reading is the exposure to different things. As parents, we should be explaining the meaning of the words or the passage.

Don't dread doing homework with your kid. They can sense it!
Look on the bright side: Your child will have more general knowledge through all the reading!

Hi. Can anyone explain to me which level a kid needs to complete before starting P1?

My kid is in ICR preliminary at present. Although he can blend words and read simple books at home his ICR teacher says he is not ready for promotion to the next level. He also does not seem to like the classes. I suspect he is bored with the lessons. I am thinking of withdrawing him from the centre and enrolling him for other English enrichment or private tution where he can progress at a more suitable pace. He has been in the preliminary class for 6 months. Can anyone advise?

How old is your child? Ideally kids should complete ICR which is a 12-month course to be a full fledged reader. However my boy did ICR for ~7 months, and having completed Vol 1-5 (taught in 6 months) and halfway through Vol 6, he could read well and so I withdrew him from ICR and put him in another enrichment to help him with grammar etc. in preparation for p1.

My son is in K2 this year but we observed that he cannot read even simple words. We are getting very worried and would like to sign him up for ICR Parkway. Our aim is for him to be able to read by the time he starts P1 in Jan next year. I hope we are not too late. I called Learning Point to enquire but was told not to even try as the kids there all can read by end of K1!

Any advice on teachers and programmes at Parkway Centre?
