Can I know how to teach kid multiplication? I used to learn them my hard and only understand why 2 x 2 is 4 when I was older.

Anyone care to share? Any easy way or useful website to teach a 5yo kid how to multiple?

        Hi, Parents

My son is in K2 this year and he was rather slow in his mental calculation for addition & subtraction. I thought of signing him up for a math enrichment to build up his math foundation for P1. I’m in dilemma whether to enroll him into CMA abacus or the drilling based MPM. Can parents give me some opinion? . Hmmm, do you think is Math enrichment necessary for a child who is slow in mental calculation. javascript:emoticon(‘:?’) He is good in other math topics like graphs, time, and fractions. Any parents have kids in MPM, can share your experience?

For parents with kids in primary school with abacus background, does your kid have problem adapting to the number bonding method taught in school. javascript:emoticon(‘:|’)

        Thanks for yr 2cts javascript:emoticon(‘’)

for P1 syllabus, multiplication concepts stems from addition basics.
2 x 3 is known as 2 groups of 3 or 2 Threes and the answer can be derived by addition ie 3+3.
P1 kids are not required to memorise multiplication tables anymore.

              Heyya J2mum,

Jedamum is right. Though there will be parents who prefer to cultivate
the rote learning / recitation style, primary schools these days do not
really base their introduction with that method. There is belief that when
a child is able to memorize the multiplication tables way before understan-
ding what the concept is really all about, the child will be able to count
faster. The answers will just be in the head.

Your question is neither silly or unfounded, its a valid worry cause as
parents, we have been out of the school life for some time now, hence
we may have forgotten how we ourselves learnt it during our times.

Here, i wud like to offer a few suggestions, if it helps, ok..?

Multiplication tables now taught in \"groups\".
For example, 2 balls in 2 groups will have 4.
Children can draw 2 circles to represent the \"group\" in this case is 2.
Then, draw in the 2 balls in each of the \"group\" / the 2 circles.

I do similar technique with concrete objects like this one below.
This was done with both P2 and K2 at the same time. As the
concept is more of addition than directly multiplication, they
were both able to work with it. And importantly, they had FUN!

I provide these lovely ladybird pegs to the girls to use for the
activity. They begin with the 2 Timestables. The circles so call
represent the home for the ladybirds. In these homes, the
ladybird flies in 2's / sets or groups of 2. They begin with...

              2 ladybirds in one home = 2
2 groups of 2 ladybirds in another home = 4 and so on...

When they're done with the counting and the pegging,
              i let them write the tables - 2 x 1 = 2 (and so on...) until
the homes have all been filled with the tables of 2.

At the back, i get them to count the total number of ladybirds
pegged to each home and write them. When they have finished
with all of the answers, we turn all the homes to the back (answers).

We will recite the answers this way 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and so on...

To diversify the interest, i use ladybird pegs of different colours,
and also pegs of other kinds. The story for the \"homes\" changes
with the materials we use. And so far, the kids like them. 😄

              Hope this helps.
