I also use salt water to gargle whenever I have sore throat.

      It’s effective.

The GP gave a 5 day course of antibiotics to bring down the swelling. Salt water will be painful. Son told me he feels very much better now. Quite upset with the dentist...the canine tooth was embedded in the gum and caused pain when extracted.

No, salt water is not painful. Not like putting salt on an ulcer! Dissolve 1 tsp of salt in half cup of warm water and hold in the mouth for a while (half a minute-1 minute). It's a very good antiseptic.

Yah, not painful. That or go to the dentist to buy a disinfecting rinse.

I avoid taking antibiotics as I have rather bad reaction to them. I relied on rinsing with the disinfecting rinse and warm salt water to prevent infection.

the swelling is quite bad after 3 days…paracetamol didn’t help relieve the pain. i asked him to use the disinfecting rinse my dentist recommended.

Hope your boy is getting better now.
after taking the antibiotic, he told me he felt much better...that area is not as painful as yesterday. if he has any extra tooth to be extracted in the near future, i am going to request for someone more senior to do so.

It has been tough on him to suffer this pain since birth…with all the operations to repair his cleft one after another. I really feel so guilty not bringing to see the doctor yesterday.

Still learning how to handle all these madness every step of the way.

Janet, your love and support for your son is highly commendable. You have always been there for him so don't feel so bad.

Keep up the good job, you are a great mum as we can see from all your postings.

I don't know that the infection would be any different with a more senior dentist. Just use the salt water or antiseptic wash to keep away infection after the next extraction. I have had 4 permanent premolars and 4 wisdom teeth extracted over the years, and I can vouch that the salt water wash works!

the last time he had an extraction done, the senior dentist did not leave any follow up. when i had wisdom tooth taken out, the dentist gave me a set of antibiotics to make sure there will not be any swelling and also a bottle of mouth wash.

Janet, you have done alot for your kids…so no guilty feeling. I always tell myself this also. They are just too many things in my mind and some may just slipped through and I find myself getting more forgetful.

On his pain…maybe try get him do something he likes as distraction.
