from what I observed, the chinese language problem is the lack of sufficient number of competent chinese language teachers who can make it interesting and enjoyable lessons from young … thus the negative momentum keep building up and this vicious cycle has been on for decades

my kids are fortunate that they went to kindergarten in chinese (in singapore) and the foundation was built from there and there is no looking back since

and in primary school, the chinese language teachers made the lesson fun and interesting - the whole class love chinese language

however, they have not reached the standard of 1,000 word compo yet, and have not tried the 4 chinese classics yet …

Think PAP wants to recruit such people also No Have (scholars are picked and trained by them and most scholars are potato people = vicious cycle...)

 those were my toes laughing... Cannot agree more.

I observe something interesting. Kiasuparents here quite pro Chinese being learned well and kiasuparents here are mostly very educated parents who are very strong in English yet supporting the culture so the ones making noise are like what insider said.......elite potatoes??

I have encountered a parent in this forum who insists that his brains is not hardwired to learn Chinese, and no matter how hard he tried, he just cannot get an A.

I think all the parents who wrote in this thread are pro-Chinese lah, or those who are not got scared away already.

Today I attended a presentation by a group of 20 students who just came back from their immersion programme in China. 18 of them are Singaporean Chinese, 2 Malays. When they talked about their reflections, they all said that the culture of the "Chinese" are very different from ours. None of them ever said that they are of Chinese origins. The younger generation of Singaporeans no longer consider themselves Chinese.

Nolah. She means that they think of themselves as Singaporeans. Am I right, Tamarind?

Ya but Singapore's national language is Malay not English. 😉 Poor kids, so confused about identity....

Actually I have also heard people saying their mother tongue is English.

Maybe most who wrote here are SAP school parents so why would they want this change?
