What about at the girls' school like RGS / NYGH? Do the non-GEP students compete on equal footing with the GEPers when it comes to DSA? My girl is not from GEP, and i was hoping she will do well in the Mths Olympiad to improve her chances of securing a place to RGS/NYGH via DSA academic. Reading what you have shared, it does not seem the olympiad results will help that much... :shock:

Also, there are only about 500 GEPpers nationwide

Actually I quite worry that DS1 will become demotivated if he is not offered a place during DSA. Even if the demotivation is temporary, it is still an emotional setback and might affect his PSLE preparation process.
Just
that if this really happens, he will be able to think positively and take it as a learning experience. -
I have the same worry as you, cascada. It can be de-motivating for the child esp if they see the GEP counterparts being offered a place. Not a good feeling to manage in the midst of psle preparation. sigh…sigh…

Suffice to say that I know them personally. And I asked precisely what is the % between GEPpers and non-GEPpers at DSA phase. The answer is what I have said before. One more thing : IP / independent schools are allowed to take in more students at DSA compared to those other schools offering DSA in niche area.verykiasu2010:

DSA via academic require very consistent TOP results from P4 to P6 (SA1). And I believe different primary schools' standard are different and so it will be sieved out via the GAT, writings, camps, and so on. I know some SAP schools' prelim t-score are on average 20 points below PSLE t-score, and the range is from 10 to 60 points difference -

Let me give you an example: if the school has 200 places filled via DSA and they inform that it is 50% GEPper and 50% mainstream (even chance), that means it is 100 each. 100 from a cohort of 500 GEPper is 20%, 100 from a cohort of 40,000+ mainstreamers is only a very small percentage. Success rate of GEPpers is definitely much higher than mainstreamers (even if you go by % of students applying for DSA for that school) -

if any non-GEP kid can prove their worth, they will get in as well, even chances. I know there are many who get in because they can prove that they are as good as their GEP peers.
if a non-GEP kid cannot even be among the top 10% of the cohort of 40,000+ kids, then blame who ? at least they do not fill up all the places with GEPpers at DSA. -

That's why at first I thought of missing out on DSA totally so that he can focus his effort on PSLE, also avoid the stress time spent on taking DSA tests & interviews.
On second thought, I'll be denying him a chance on DSA if not trying at all.

I think the approach to it is this : this is an additional chance to try to get into that dream school. If can get in - good. If not, redouble the effor for PSLE. Nothing to be disappointed - tell it to the kids. Grab the extra opportunity provided - especially if the kids have been producing good results consistentlyclover18:

If the child has been producing good results consistently or is talented in sports etc, don't waste the opportunity. After all, you don't know what might happen at PSLE. Yes, the bet will be very big if all placed on that 4 days of PSLE.
I’m satisfied with DS’s results being one of the top 20 students in his SAP school cohort. So it would appear to be unfair if I don’t let him try DSA. However, that will mean I’ve to carefully manage his expectation every now and then till the day he’s allocated a school.
