mathsparks:
based on heresay, for mainstreamers applying via academics alone (i.e. score more than 90 marks in year end exams), they've been advised to apply after the psle results are released..unless the student has particpated and excelled in competitions.
contrary to the above, at last year's open house of one of the top boy school, the principal openly said if the kids (non-GEP) have been achieving high 80s and 90s since P4, they should apply -

I do not agree with the hearsay, last year my DS's score was average 93 except HCL was in the range of 75. He got in HCI through DSA.
So, I would strongly encourage parents to try out DSA for their kid if you think your kid is up to mark.
God Bless! -
maybe it also depend on how the kids perform during the interview :?

haha verykiasu, then i must be sleeping at the open houses last year. Then again, I didn’t attend all open houses, so perhaps I’m unaware. I’m sure they are encouraged to apply.
Just asked around your contacts (former students), and there will be cases of students being told at interviews that, since their results are so good, they should wait for the psle…I’ve even heard this at briefings. i.e., dont waste time applying, focus on your revision, if your results are good, your psle grades will show.
I’m not trying to discourage mainstreamers from applying, just sharing what I heard…Bear in mind that dsa results are released near the psle oral dates, so if the child can handle his emotions well(not just his own disappointment but acceptance of the unfairness that most gepers would be successful in theirs), go for it…for the experience, why not? -

When my time comes, if ever we go for DSA, we will not open the envelope for the results until Oral is over.

The news of release (usually those offer one or their smiling parents will let go) will circulate in school and your child will come back and ask you.

My ds kenna the same advice from two of the famous schools which Mathspark mentioned. Luckily not all top schools are like that, another top school gave him an offer for DSA and now he is with this school though his result could make it to the others, cos angry with them wat. I always think he may be in one of the first two schools now if he had waited till PSLE release. -
MdmKS:
Pardon me for my ignorance after reading your post. If one gets into a school of choice via DSA, after PSLE result, one cannot change to another school even if it is a better one? I know even if DSA accepted, it is only provisional because one has to meet the minimum PSLE aggregate. So how about if a child does exceedingly well and wants a change of a better school choice, boleh or not? :?
