Just wondering which is better way for my P2 child to learn Chinese Composition: private tutor or language centre?


She did very well for her P1 Chinese. I’m just preparing her for the future.
I hope my child can gradually love Chinese more. She does not read Chinese books outside of school, only English ones.

Hi, sharing personal experience. Doing very well in primary 1 does not mean your child is doing very well in other level. P1 mostly tests on Han Yu Pin Yin. P2 onwards tests on 汉字。 If your child doesn't read, how is your child going to recognize the Chinese characters. My dd has a classmate last year in P2. Her classmate did so well in P1 for Chinese but standard drop in P2. Do you know why? The child is only strong in HYPY but very weak in Chinese word recognition.

If you have time and money, can try both and see which one suits your child more.

Does anyone know if Tian Xia sets more difficult questions than schools? My ds just did a Tian Xia test last week and he got 46 over 55. He is only in P1 ,I am wondering if I should be worried and try to do more for Chinese?

Sharing my experience. I started my son when he was in K1 with home Chinese tutor because my husband is English and my Chinese is not so good. The home Chinese tutor worked well for him in P1 and P2 and he was scoring over 90%. But P3 onwards I found that his Chinese grades started dropping to ~70%. I sent him to Tien Hsia for a few months but he didn’t like it and it didn’t seem to help him so I let him continue with the home tutor. Last year in P5 he was barely passing Chinese and I started panicking. I went to Wang’s to check it out but I didn’t like it because the class sizes were too big (I was there on a Saturday and it was like a factory of kids going in and out) and I think my son would be totally lost in the class. I decided to check out Xuelin at I12. I spoke to the teachers and explained to them my situation. They reassured me they can help so I decided to try out. My son has been there for over a year now and he really loves it there. The class sizes are small and being around kids his age (rather than home tution) really help motivate him to speak more Chinese. The teachers even tailored a special 1-on-1 class for him during the school holidays for him to catch up with his other class mates. He even won an award for compo writing in his class at school. He is now P6 and his school teacher commented (for CA1) that his oral has greatly improved.

I think being in a small class setting like at Xuelin helps the kids. I hear them when I sit outside the class interacting in Chinese with the teacher and with each other. Hope this helps

My children is in another Han Language Centre in Simei branch (Eastpointmall) . Heard from her that the students improved a lots in the recent SA1. They enjoyed the class and the teacher are good not just in teaching but help foster in the students the morally sound values and outlook on the world and life to students. Quite good. The teacher is male and he is young, simply because he is younger, so have not become as jaded as their older associates by a profession that is far more difficult than most people understand. Also, younger teachers may be better able to relate more closely to their students. This helps speed the process of relationship building between teachers and students, which is critical in the educational environment.


If your child wants to improve and learn happily in Chinese, I am recommend him. He is Mr. Chin, specialized in Pri Chinese and Secondary Chinese ( O-level ). He may teach lots of techniques how to answer and understated the question.

Hi all parents here! Help needed here

We are a group of students from Temasek Junior College and we are currently doing a project on the issue of the lack of speaking Chinese at home amongst children aged 5 to 6 (the preschoolers)! I created flash cards based on the 汉字 in each lesson to teach my son. The flash cards used different colors to highlight each 边旁 of the chinese char also with a picture to highlight how the character evolve to the current form. This on the long run help him to remember easier words by the 边旁 and faster in spelling.


However this method, needs the daily involvement of the parent teaching the child a few characters daily.
