2016 PSLE Discussions (Born in 2004)

Saw a number of earlier posts on homework.
We are one of those who are totally overloaded. In our case, one particular teacher piles them with mountains of homework…very hardworking and well meaning teacher but nevertheless over-zealous. Now DS has no time for any other subject. Have tried talking to the teacher to no avail…the teacher firmly believes that practice makes perfect. Many of his classmates are having late nights due to this. That can’t be good for anyone.
DS2 just told me he doesn’t care how he does his hw as long as he completes it…this goes against all our values …that when it comes to hw, quality is more important than quantity.
Sigh… -
When kids are piled with homework, the objective is to complete. Forget quality. I’ve been monitoring daughter’s workload. She has homework for 3 subjects almost daily (exempted from MT). But she asked me to do proper revision for some topics because she doesn’t understand the questions in past year exam papers.

DS school doesn’t have much homework. Even with supplementary class, he will be done with his homework by dinner time. I have no complaints for that… only thing is that because of that, he is still in his Lalaland, thinking no difference in PSLE year versus the rest. He has no tuition and has been managing ok, not fantastic but at least manage to squeeze into the top class every year. I am a bit stressed reading everything that is done in other schools, hope his school is well prepared as well !!!

I suppose it really depends on the subject teachers of your DS. Cannot really compare with other schools I suppose. Probably can ask the teachers during the next PTM. -

sleepy, i quite regret spending $70 buying the sets of past year exam papers...daughter has loads of homework everyday...it would be cruel for me to add in work on my side.sleepy:

Do it with her instead of letting her do by herself. Correct or clarify when she has any doubt so she won't be wasting time and feeling stressed, ie, treat it as revision rather than assessment and hopefully that will give her more confidence.sleepy:

thanks for your tip Nebbermind...stressed these few days not knowing whether she is ready for mid year. every morning looking at the stack of past year papers but every night sitting there to see her complete school homework just in time before bed.

Most marks are lost at the open ended stuff, so may want to zoom in on that instead of Mcq.
Unless the strategy is to score as high ad possible for Mcq and close an eye to the rest, which is kind of dangerous.
