Just curious to know why History is not popular with many students? Is it due to very difficult to score or very content heavy or simply many students are not interested in this subject. My child will be in JC1 next year and she is currently taking History. Thus, would like to find out more as this is a possible subject that she might be taking. In terms of content, is there a great jump form secondary level History to JC History? Any advice is welcome. TIA.

For someone who didn't like History but did History, I would say it's both: heavy content and difficult to score.

I remember sitting beside an older friend who was doing History in NUS and hearing her telling me she liked History and I was bewildered that there were people who 'like History', and she said it with a smile too.

Like any other subject, there's no reason you shouldn't do History if you like it. If you have the passion for it, you will reap a lot of insights from the subject even after many years following graduation. I often wish I treated History more seriously. But I agree that History is hard to score. Not sure how the papers are like now but it used to be somewhat like GP where you needed to substantiate your opinion with good evidence, except that your evidence is littered in a sea of notes. A classmate asked our History tutor what she got for her A level History and she said 'B', citing 'too many notes' with a troubled looking face as the reason she did 'poorly'.

Not sure if this would help but if it's possible to find out what kind of History is covered, maybe your child can decide if she at least is interested in it?

All JCs have very good notes prepared by their teachers. Lecturers use lecture notes and tutors use tutorials in teaching.

Students are expected to read the textbooks on their own when they do self study. Textbooks (hardcopy or softcopy) are expected to be brought to school.

Hmm... depends on the school. Some JCs don't use textbooks at all. And the kids don't purchase any.

Same here. My son from VJC doesn't take Lit. He uses only the notes from school for his subjs.
I am very curious. Which JCs expect their students to bring the subj text to school?
Also it is not true that all JCs hv good notes. My son doesn't think the notes for one of his subjs is good enough. His sch mates think likewise. He says the ones from Tampines JC are pretty solid. Tampines JC has excellent distinction rates for that subj.
