1/3 of every P6 cohort move on to Normal courses? So high? The school statistics I was shown every year hovered below or around 20% only. 33% is a tad high!

I think the distribution engineered that way. However, I believe substantial % of the NA will eventually move on to complete Poly and even getting a Degree.

Was having a discussion recently with friends. I was bemoaning the lack of education on values in schools. Schools only care about excelling in studies, sports and leadership , I said. A friend disagreed. Maybe she was right - because I do hear of schools which believe in compassion and letting children develop at their own pace.


When my first child went to P1, I was so excited. I thought the school culture had changed for the better and teachers would be more excited about all the new teaching methods and certainly be more engaged with the children and parents. There was so much in the news about parents being partners. Boy was I in for a rude shock.

Disillusioned, I definitely 'fought back' against the system - often questioning why things were done in a certain way and imploring teachers to show greater passion towards their young charges. Many a time I did it not just for my kids but also for all the others in the school.

I can honestly tell you that on a number of occasions, my good intentions back-fired. My children ended up being discriminated against because of their meddling mother. I can tell you that this was devastating because I really wasn't being unreasonable. It was basic stuff which would take little effort to improve on/implement ...e.g. returning books and revision materials to the students before their exams instead of holding on to them. It would have made a huge difference to the kids. I wasn't asking for the moon by any means.

Most parents out there keep silent when things go wrong. They are afraid their kids will be 'marked'. Well,sadly, I have just proven them right.

But I stuck with my values. I pointed out to my kids what should be done, even though it wasn't. I also apologised to them for letting them stay in a system which though deemed 'world-class' in terms of academic prowess, failed them when it came to helping to instill the right values.

Just my experience. Maybe yours is different.

Interesting post. What kind of 'values' are you referring to?

In general, I find the current generation of kids more selfish and self centred...some even go to the extend to sabo (in pri school)...probably due to the current more competitive environment.

Any parents know whether the candidates can leave for home once the written PSLE ends?

like if english paper ends at 1220h, parents can fetch them home or still need to stay in school until official dismiss time like 1.30pm?

Yes, they can go home straight after end of paper for PSLE written.

Thanks, hopefully is same practise throughout all schools, not just selective schools based on principal's decision.

It's the same practice for all schools as PSLE is a national exam.

But I understand some schools make their students stay back for extra lessons but this is rare.

I think it is difficult for the school to conduct extra lessons after the PSLE exam as the teachers will be invigilating the PSLE exam in other schools and difficult to rush back to conduct extra lessons.

PSLE exam days...DC should come home as early as possible and have a good rest....
to be ready for the next day.

I relate to one incident my colleague told me. She shared half her boy's P5 classmates in a HA class failed CL exam. I can't imagine what's the stats like for MA classes then. :slapshead:

I'm all for differentiation as top students need to be academically challenged. But some schs carry it too far. :spank:

Are you referring to the deceased who was previously studying in
Maha Bodhi school when he was alive? Did Maha Bodhi really set the P5 exam too difficult this time that a boy committed sucide?

I didn't know Maha Bodhi is considered as an elite school. I thought it is just an average SAP school.

whatever revision should have completed before psle. no point cramming as it will backfire. a good night’s sleep is important before each exam…first 2 papers are thursday and friday. a short breather before the next paper on monday.
