I think its good for the child to look into different routes before deciding. Encourage to attend open houses for JC as well as the different polytechnic with his friends or otherwise.

Tuition will burn a big hole in your pocket, likewise he will earn good income should be teach tuition when he completed his A levels! My friend saw himself through university by tutoring during JC, before and after NS as well as while studying for his degree!

son wanted to try for DPA…but now, he wants to make a decision after his results are released. he can’t decide between business studies, infocomm or JC. there is less pressure since he is not using mid year and prelim results.

Hi, my son did badly in A Maths for the mid year and wanted to drop this subject for O level. He is still doing E Maths. Will dropping A Maths affect him in his selection in JC or Poly or even Univ next time? Thanks

My opinion is that A Maths is very important if your son wishes to continue pursuing science courses in future. I understand that for JC, those without A Maths are not eligible for science stream as H2 Maths is a requirement. Without A Maths, most JCs will only allow the student to take H1 Maths at A level. That will put him in Arts stream. Most Uni science and engineering courses require H2 Maths as a prerequisite. I have no idea about Poly. Please check and think carefully before giving up A Maths.

son is taking pure bio...really a BIG hole in my pocket. fortunately the tutor is rather accommodating. if son has any doubts in physics or chem, tutor is also happy to help him. english tuition another big ticket.

As someone who went through the JC route, I would say that JC will give your child the required exposure in academics and also the opportunity to explore interests beyond his acads. If your child has a goal in mind on what he wants his career path to be like, then I would say that the poly route would be much better as it will gear him towards his goals. Unlike in JC where we learn a bit of everything, in Poly, the students will be trained in their niche area and this can help them better in the future as they are likely to be more well versed in the area as compared to JC kids. Also, now that the government is supporting Poly education as well, going the poly route can also get you into a good local university.

Hence, it is more of whether your child has made up his mind on what he wants to do in the future.
