Compare RGS vs NYGH

678Yess:
How does students from nygh mix and learn from and with students with other races in nygh since there is no other race, except chinese in nygh, please explain?
No offence, but you really seem to have a lot of misconceptions abt NYGH.
Besides chinese, there are other races & nationalities in NYGH, as well as other SAP schools. -
Don avoid the question, explain if you can. Admit it if it is not possible for a few people that tried to explain, but explain and tell nothing at all… Are these people from Nygh that is just can not articulate and talk about an issue?
-
Multi racial school does not mean they definitely learn and mix with each other. A certain school’s principal even divided canteen according to race / religion not so long ago
And there are other races studying Chinese too
Nygh offer Malay for malay students in Nygh? And, there are indian doing Hindi in Nygh? Honestly, I am not aware. And, if there is, please explain. If it does not have, please admit, that is all. You do not show how informed you are about nygh… If you know more, is it your privilege to explain and make others know it clearly. Rather than, like some of you said, "go to the open house"… -
Hi there. I don’t think NY and RG should be compare like this. If multi racial is more important to you, consider RG. If bicultural, chinese values is more important, consider NY. If indifferent, go by what are your strengths and weaknesses and see which school provide an environemnt that would allow you to reach your dream… The two schools were never the same and will never be the same in the future, they each have their own strenghts, fans and supporters.
-
That’s life…not so straight forward as one would like. I feel that as parents we just have to try to find a School that will be a potential good fit for our child. This is after we as parents truly understand the personality, character and learning styles of our DC.
Nothing is for sure…just have to pray and hope for the very best that our DC will do well in which ever school that they are enrolled at. -

678Yess, in public forum, you are free to express your view. You had been throwing stones at Mdm Heng & NYGH for almost a year and all KSP's parents heard you.pirate:
Nygh is not a private sxhool, it is only independent school. Majority of the fund comes from the government.678Yess:
And therefore it should be commended for following the spirit of MOE policies, which is to look beyond a narrow view of education. Things like character, diversity, mixed ability classes etc.what is done these two sxhool needs to be answerable to the general public. I was saying the policy adopted by nygh is not fair to each applicant. Since they are funded by tax payer money through, every applicant shd be treated equally.Meritocarcy is the fundamental of our society.
NYGH is just recognizing what parents already know - that not all primary schools are equal. I do not see anything wrong with NYGH's approach to DSA.
Turning the clock back to Aug last year, if, I say IF, your dd was given CO from both NYGH and RGS, which would you choose?
678Yess:
Yeah. I know of a mommy who was critically reflecting about NYGH DSA process too. Her DD DSA to 4 schools, received 3COs including from her top choice RGS, but not granted interview by NYGH. She went round describing the whole NYGH DSA process - from interviewers' profile, student profile, what was discussed in the special tea session, the interview questions to different applicants, which group was selected/given CO as it was a pre-fixed, how the different applicants fare against each other.....basically the message was....DSA process in NYGH was unfair. My aim was to express how I and some of those I knew felt about the whole DSA process I have been through with NYGH, and critically reflecting about it.
I was quite 'amazed' how she managed to extrapolate from the few datapoints she might have......
IMO, choose a school that the child fits......my DD didn't get her CO from NYGH either.....we were devastated, had our ego bruised....but she's now happily studying in NYGH. It's not a perfect place & there will still be grouses....but every school will have their pros and cons. -

:rotflmao: Oops, I'm not from NYGH, however I have spoken to some students during their open house, they are very confident, very articulate, sincere and humble. And yes, I have seen non Chinese with NYGH uniform. If you're very interested in NYGH, suggest you visit them during their Aug carnival, I'm sure they will welcome you.
Oh, also, some students who do not receive CO from NYGH ultimately enter NYGH via their T-score, that's the only school they want to go, so happy for them. I can only say this group of girls really know what they want. -

Just wondering, since you have some many issues with NYGH, why did your dd apply NYGH DSA last year?? Should just stick to RGS will do. Why waste your precious time in applying to enter a school which you think that has some many problems..... -
678Yess:
To be sure, NYGH is a SAP school and like any other SAP school, students who enrol into the school have to do Higher Mother Tongue, and since NYGH only offers one Mother Tongue, the natural choice of language is Higher Chinese.Multi racial school does not mean they definitely learn and mix with each other. A certain school's principal even divided canteen according to race / religion not so long ago

I am very certain NYGH does not have any issues enrolling non-Chinese students, even Malays or Indians. However, students of these races are not likely to choose NYGH as they are unlikely to do well in Higher Chinese. Sure, there are non-Chinese who have studied Chinese since kindergarten and can be more eloquent in Mandarin than their Chinese peers but very few of these students are willing to do Higher Chinese at NYGH's level, especially when they don't have the linguistic environment to help better their Chinese. The fact that NYGH consists mostly of Chinese may also deter non-Chinese from enrolling as well.
There's nothing to 'admit'. It's not something that's shameful or should be apologetic about.
When 'non-Chinese' is mentioned, I am sure the posters do not only have Malays and Indians in mind. I am not in the school every day but I do know there is at least one Eurasian and one Caucasian in the school. Must we go down this line of stating the number of non-Chinese in the school? Does anyone demand to know how many non-Chinese there are in other schools? If you don't like NYGH practice of being a SAP school, then just strike it off your list.
I know of parents who have decided RGS is not a good choice and have struck it off their list. They don't go around grousing how terrible RGS is and impose their opinion on others. I don't understand your intention of continuously questioning the practices of NYGH, from dsa procedure to her racial ratio. Don't like the school, forget about it lah. Your continuous questioning of the school's practices makes me feel that you are bitter that NYGH did not recognise how exemplary the child was and you'd wished your child got in NYGH very badly. All of these I am sure you will deny, but don't worry, we'd understand

This is just a general comment upon observing many posts in different threads about DSA. I’ve been silently reading these days, as I’m seeing more and more of dissatisfaction / query of DSA that really irks me.
I do not understand the mentality of parents bearing grudges against schools for unsuccessful DSA of their kids, or even against certain group of kids if their kids are unsuccessful in DSA.
Schools have their right to decide their DSA process or what type of kids they want to offer COs, based on their limitation in manpower and vacancies. And they probably have their "success formula", given they have been having this DSA for years. GAT or no GAT, selection tests or no need, it’s the school’s decision based on if they think they need to assess if the kids meet the mark or they are sure of the kid’s meeting the standard. Why should it be up to the parents to question that?
Not offering CO to one’s kid does not mean the kid is no good, just that the school feels there is another kid who is a better fit. Every parent thinks their kid is good enough to enter the school, that’s why they apply for DSA to that school. Does that mean that the school has to offer every kid that applies?
Seriously, if parents are so against the school’s DSA, don’t apply. Take the usual route of PSLE. If you are applying DSA, be prepared to accept what the schools are looking for and their procedures. There is afterall the PSLE route for every kid and DSA is just a very small part in the overall picture.
