Remember his speech ?

\"You don't need to enter university to get a U degree to be successful person\".

Under new scheme, its either you are good or you are just average. There is no in between.
Parents need to change their mindset.
Target less degree holder so as to cover plently of jobs available which does not require U degree in the market.
After a year-long review, (PM) said, the Government had decided to offer 3,000 more university places a year by 2020. The bulk of these places, which will be created by expanding the Singapore Institute of Technology and SIM University, will go to polytechnic graduates, many of whom increasingly aspire to have a degree.
http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/is-a-degree-really-all-important

The new lower bands are wide for a good reason I'm sure! :siam:

The words would be more convincing if we see the Ministers' children not going to Ivy League but take up a blue collar profession. :siam:

His DD went to NUS leh...maybe furthering her studies overseas now...\"He\" = the minister who uttered the above.

mathtuition88:

My concern as Math educator is that students extremely talented in Mathematics/Science but slightly weak in languages will be disadvantaged in the new PSLE system.

To quote from my own blog entry titled \"New PSLE System favors โ€œAll Roundersโ€ over โ€œSpecialists\"\":

Imagine a Math/Science-whiz with

Math:100 (AL 1)
Science: 98 (AL 1)
English: 84 (AL 3)
Chinese: 84 (AL 3)

Total marks: 366 (Approx. 275 T-score)
Total AL: 8

Previously such a student's score is more than sufficient to enter the top schools like RI/HCI. But under the new system, his score of 8, chances of entering the top schools are slim.

It is not about the prestige, but rather the resources and enrichment programmes that top schools provides that other schools may not. Some examples include Olympiad training, Laboratory sessions, etc.

For these kind of students, the PSLE score of 100 is not enough to capture their ability in Math/Science, they would score 150/100 if there is such a thing. Hence, their calibre is well above the \"All-Rounders\" who score 90 for each subject and get 4 points.

Unfortunately, the new PSLE system does not bode well for these students...

If those talented in Maths & Science : some may prefer to goto NUS High via DSA or via Phase 2 post-Psle results after some students reject / turn down NUS High DSA offer, thereby creating some vacancies for students to enter, instead of the usual IP \"A\" level Secondary schools.

But if they did not goto NUS High, got posted to an IP school or to an O level school : wherever they are, they will shine brilliantly, if they have talent & passion in Maths & Science.
It will show up, through their daily work, and in their regular Term 1 to Term 4 Term tests marks scored.

The Maths & Science subject Secondary school Teachers should have no problem identifying them, since they shine So brightly, & the Teachers will groom them further, in their passion.

The concern we have is :
In the event P6 students got balloted into a dual track school :

Example :
got posted or got balloted into Catholic High, or to Victoria school, to Cedar, or to SCGS / St Nick, all these are dual track schools -
What kind of AL Banding criteria determine whether the student get posted into the IP track to study for 6 years, or to the O level track for 4 years ?

How does the AL Banding Cut-off point determine or decide which stream the student or what fate the student end up in ?
End up in O level, or end up in IP programme, in the case / event of balloting, into dual track Sec schools ?
Moe have not given us any detail, yet.

you see? you see? Don't anyhow suggest removal of DSA Acad domain from 2021 onwards. They need this lifeline more than the unaffected cohorts.

Even under the current system, which purportedly favours the subject specialists, you might still run the risk of denying some math prodigies in the likes of Lim Jxxk of specialised math education/training. Fortunately for this group of specialists who are usually weak in 1 or 2 langs, they were saved by the Acad domain.

http://i65.tinypic.com/161dnis.png\">

Do high scorers still do that nowadays, i.e. go against the tide and apply to a school that they deem better in their eyes, regardless of its prevailing ranking and prestige? If you look at the highest COP column, some did qualify for a higher-ranking sec sch, e.g. SAP stream, but they chose not to ...

:?

This is interesting. If the COP didn't change much from the 80s till 2001 (since the way T-scores are calculated weren't changed since 1973 and only some minor tweaks to letter grades was made), we can check if there was a sudden uptick in COP for hot schools starting from 2004 (DSA, IP etc...) can't we?

jetsetter, where did you find the COP info?

I mean, if we can confidently infer that the increase in COP for schools like Nanyang Girls' were attributed to the introduction of IP/DSA, then we can confidently say that the policies have somewhat changed parents'/students' behavior and those \"new initiatives\" of not revealing top scorers etc are really quite ineffective....

It certainly suggests to me that parents/students do not like taking standardized exams. And anything to avert that (enrichments, DSAs, IPs (to avert O Levels), affiliation) all points to the same direction of behavior.

blurry burger, I got it from MOE website ๐Ÿ˜›

The Big 4 in 2002 (i.e. 2 years before they were accorded the IP status and before DSA was introduced) have always been in the top 10 since the 90s. I think both the IP scheme and DSA policies have somewhat affected people's choices and perception over the yrs.

In the past, when there was no \"bundling\"/\"pairing\" of top middle schools and high schools, people were less stressed out, or should I say, hard up for those Big 4. If they'd qualified for SAP and scored above 260, a score which would otherwise well qualify them for RI and RGS in those days when there was express stream, they might simply pick say CCHS because they lived in Tg Katong, or even a non-SAP school that didn't require them to take the dreadful CL1, e.g. Cedar, TKGS, PLMGS, etc.

This was because after the O levels, they knew they still had the freedom to pick another JC per their grades. But now, they are required to go straight to a designated IPJC in that bundle. If they don't like that IPJC, they will have to strive harder to qualify for another \"bundle\"/\"pair\" that contains the top 2 JCs ๐Ÿ™‚ PP's choice patterns have evolved.

There were students from tier 1 Express sec schools (non-SAP) or neighbourhood schs getting into RJC and HCJC during my time. This route is no longer possible today. The only way is to get into their middle schools before PSLE via DSA or after PSLE via s1 posting.

Jetsetter's sharing of the 2002 COP was to show that the upper limit showed that top PSLE scorers are spread across a few schools. To answer your question Jetsetter, if there are any unusual upper limit COP seen in some of the schools(outside the popular ones) today, it could be only a handful of kids. In the 2002 table it could be a bigger sample with points nearer the upper limit in the schools. So the answer is yes, there are such kids spread in various schools but reduced today....since top scorers are squeezing together in some schools.

Yes, you got my point ๐Ÿ™‚ Tk u! Definitely bigger sample during the pre-IP years, but no longer so these days!

There is nothing wrong with the introduction of the IP scheme but what is wrong is the way we responded to it and we cannot put the blame squarely on the programme. We assume all our kids MUST and CAN go the direct uni-bound way and hence compete fiercely in that direction. However some kids are suitable to go the poly way or ITE way to find their forte or sometimes those paths are also stepping stones for them to eventually end up in the uni...albeit later but still good if they excel. Speed is not the essence in education for everyone but a suitable path is, as we can see our kids speeding to high stress now.
Agreed!

But like ss88 said, some are \"uni-bound\", others are not (or yet). That's what KBW was trying to say...And if they so choose to advance their career, then go to those 2 new unis thru the Poly route. Don't need to fight tooth and nail and sweat at 12 to get into an IP school.

Anyway, don't take Engg lah. Tough life for ladies!

Also agree Engg is tough for ladies so supporting the dd to do engg is commendable because many parents want their kids to do a degree but will stay away from Engg.
