[Bishan] Primary Schools
-
I’m a catholic, so is my boy. I’m not staying near the sch, but is thinking of moving to within 1km. I dun plan to do PV though.
I think being a catholic doesn’t mean u get a seat in phase 2B right? -

That's ok. I kept merging them into the Bishan thread because that's where they should be. I'll leave this post here until someone finally replies with answers to your question.Hi,

Firestation,
I’ve left you a private message with a URL to another parenthood forum. You may get some responds from there.
Cheers… -
If you mean, being a Catholic "automatically" gets you a place in the school, then, the answer is "No". You’ll just get the chance to register under phase 2B. PVs are also under the same phase.
From 1) past statistics; 2) judging on how early parents these days are planning for P1 registrations; 3) its affiliation to secondary school; and 4) Cat High’s outstanding "O’’ level results this year, its popularity will only get higher, thus, chances of balloting <1km is still extremely high. Depends on whether you want to take the chance. Plus point for staying within 1km of the school is that, if you are unsuccessful in balloting under phase 2B, you can still have a go under phase 2C, but that’s another risk and big decision you have to make.
Perhaps consider another school as a "back up"? Maris Stella High? Its a Catholic boys school, has affiliation to secondary school, not too far from Bishan, and is quite good academically wise too. -
I'm more keen in catholic high, cos that is the nearest catholic school near my place. I stay in Yishun.hee.
Didn't know that Maris Stella is near Bishan. I hought it is hidden somewhere in the east.hahha.
Another place to consider is St Mic, but that's kinda of far.
I want to put my boy in Catholic school is because we are catholic, but I think it's quite difficult, cos I dun have intention of doing PV and other than being a catholic, there is really nothing much I can do to 'fight' for a place in Catholic high though.

At the moment, other than moving to within 1km of the school, you really do not have a chance to register in Catholic High. It also doesn't help that Catholic has a small intake.
Maris Stella is not in the East, its on Bartley Road :D, well, actually its not very near Bishan, but just 10-15 mins drive, and I think it would be nearer to you than SJI Junior (St. Michael's). If I remember correctly, there is no balloting in phase 2B for Maris Stella.
Good luck in any case, whatever your decision is

goosiegoose, NYPS close their PV around Sep/Oct. To be on the safe side, you may want to apply Jun/Jul 2010. Moving to within 1km will increase your chance of being accepted as PV and getting in the school in 2B.goosiegoose:
that is very good advice. Thanks! I shall apply to be a PV for those few schools first. For a child born in 2006, when should I apply to the schools?
Born in 2006 means register in 2012? Then apply in end 2010. -

Thanks tulip for your advise.:)
If Maris Stella is a good school, I'm wondering why there is no balloting? is it because no houses nearby? I read somewhere that Maris Stella is a SAP school?
I think my boy is in P2A2 for both St Mic and Chongfu. and I stay in Yishun. but I do prefer catholic school as I'm a catholic.

Hi,
I am not sure why, perhaps your observation is one of the reasons. If you check against Kiasu Parent’s Ranking of Primary School in terms of Academic Excellence, Maris Stella is amongst the Top 20, not bad I would say. And, yes, previously forgot to mention that Maris Stella is a SAP school. But, I have to caution that we should just view past statistics as a guide, we don’t know when this school will start to have balloting for >2km under phase 2B.
Being in phase 2A2 of St. Mic, will almost certainly guarantee you a place in the school. If you do move to Bishan, and eventually decided not to go for balloting in Cat High, you would have the option to register in St. Mic and its not too far away from Bishan, a 10-15 mins drive.
Its tough decisions to make and I’m sorry I can’t offer much advice, sometimes it really goes down to the wire, you really need to wait till the actual registration starts, at this point, we really won’t know how many registrants we’re expecting in each phase.
