P1 Tution -- Necessary?

for p1, what is important is the ability to read and understand.

phonics is essential to learn.

My child problem is she could read but she can’t understand, thus unable to do problem sums. Please advise how to train her to understand what is the questions asking about.

OK with Eng Compre?

Underline key words. Use abbreviations for names. Use manipulatives. Role play (i.e. act out the story sum). Draw models. Translate to mother tongue if necessary (!), but not a long term solution beyond P2. Buck up on Eng.

The mother can sit down (everyday) and push her primary school son to excel but can she do likewise when the son enters secondary school?

it is not easy to tutor kids. after working, have to rush home and wear a different hat. Can't survive long..haha...

i think child need to take ownership of his/her own education. They need to know why they need to study and how to make study fun and digestable in his/her own way. Nice on theory, but it is difficult on the implementation. Imagine talking to a 6-7 year on life philosophy, i think they will switch off the channel to me...:D

The message has to be adjusted to the age. It's not too early to start with the broad outline. Initially, the parent will probably have to draw up the rules and supervise more closely, but always with the intention to eventually \"work themselves out of a job\". The child's individual drive and maturity will affect how it works too - my older girl needed very close supervision for 2 yrs, and then still needed some supervision for some years more, while my younger girl was supervised closely for about 2 weeks and was pretty much on her own by P3.

P1 compre still easy, ya she looks for keyword but sonetimes the answer is not so straight forward so even when she found the keyword but still can't answer correctly.
And of cos weak english will affect her problem sums.... Really don't know how to brush up her english.
